my laptop has a yellow line vertically across the top of the screen whats wrong

... vertically means up and down... I think you he horizontally (horizons are horizontal). I would turn it off for a bit, perhaps look into BIOS and reset the settings, but most likely something is broken and you will have to replace it to fix. It could be the screen, or the GPU, either way it is not cost effective to fix most of the time.

Most of the time a few year old laptop has suffered overheating problem and then has a dying GPU
