As a NEWBE to the 'puter world, I would like to build my own system according to the guide here in tomshardware but I have question I hope someone out ther can help me with. Once I have all the components assembled, do I just load Windows 98 and enter the BIOS to change the setting or does the O/S do that for me?????? Any help is appreciated.
When upgrading this puter, I had to enter the BIOS and change the CPU setting to get the MB to recognize the new processor. Before I build a system and put out the bucks for all the hardware, I need someone to guide me in what to do after I get it all assembled. Do I just boot it up and install the O/S or what?? I feel like Ray Charles in a movie theater!!!!!
It's not that tough. In the manual you get with the motherboard it explains all the options in the BIOS and all you have to do is change each one according to your hardware. Don't be worried about it.
To load the os you use a boot disk (A Floppy that has files on it that allow the computer to run off the disk), When the computer boots up off the disk it will eventually take you to the A prompt, If you type in fdisk it will take you to the fdisk options menu, but before that you do want to use LBA, so type Y at that screen, from there you can choose to make your hdd all 1 partition or partition it 2 or more ways, if you choose to have more than 1 partition make sure you make one of them active, or it wont work, after you have done that you can then exit fdisk, I dont know if its essential but I always reboot the sys by hitting cnrtl, Alt, Del at this stage, when it boots back to the A prompt, you can type in format c:, this will prepare the hdd to take the os,after that reboot the sys, when it comes back to the A prompt, put the cd in the drive, type in the letter of your cd rom drive (D or E), then type setup and sit back and wonder at the genius of the Microsoft engineers, LOL
Missed the "Start with CD Rom support" window, first time is not important as you are not using the cd rom, but you do need cd rom support to load the os, so second time is a definite yes
Oh yes one more thing, you better make sure you have a Windows Emergency Boot disk at hand. It has the CD-ROM drivers required to launch the windows setup from DOS.
