1. What is your budget?
Roughly $400, but open to suggestions over this price 2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering? 3. What screen resolution do you want?
For these two, it honestly doesn't matter that much; basically just want the best I can get for a reasonable price. 4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
Portability is key. I'm looking for something 5lbs or (preferably) lighter. 5. How much battery life do you need?
The longer the better, but if I had to throw a number at it 5+ hours would probably be in the right ball park. 6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?
Games not necessary. 7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)
Use for this will be browsing the internet, using coding software the likes of Visual Studio and possibly some SDKs like Unity 8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
I suppose as low as 160GB, but the more the better. 9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.
I frequent newegg.com, but am open to other sites.
10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?
11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?
Optical drive not 100% necessary, but DVD drive would be nice. Won't need to be able to burn CDs or DVDs though. 12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.
I do have my preferences (HP, Intel, Nvidia), but as this won't be my primary gaming rig, I'm very open to what ever is the best bang for the buck. 13. What country do you live in?
USA 14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.
I'm a college student and I currently have an HP Pavillion dv6t Select Edition that is roughly a year and a half old. As of late, it's been giving me a lot of issues from graphics card issues to wireless/ethernet issues and I'm no longer able to play some games. Most importantly, it's a bit heavier than is convenient to be toting around campus and the battery life is far from what I wish it were--I get through two 75 minute classes before I need to plug in--and it overheats like crazy even when using the integrated Intel HD graphics over the dedicated ATI card.
My plan is to get something nice and portable that I can write/compile code on that is light and has great battery life; then build a custom desktop to be my main rig.
I appreciate any advice and suggestions you can offer. Again, I'm open to suggestions above my price range. I'm really looking for the best deals as I'm more of a software nerd than hardware.
