but i will ask it anyway. Funds are real tight and I am just wondering if an older pc with intergrated graphics can be upgraded by putting a newer card in an open slot.

Yes,- if your Mainboard does not have a AGP slot, you can still get PCI slot graphic cards.
Should be better than the onboard graphics.

Yes, preferably an AGP slot if you have one.
