Changing Graphic Cards

It has been suggested to me that before AGP graphic cards are replaced/upgraded, you should first uninstall the previous cards driver as problems can sometimes occur.
Is this true.
I thought that you could install the new driver when prompted and this would automatically remove the previous driver.
And how do you uninstall the previous driver so that there are none before the new graphic card is installed. {Is this uninstall option in the same section as the install from CD, etc section}. Using Win98SE.
Thanks,
