I have a Treo650 with Kinoma Player 3EX and Producer. I also have some
demo video clips that show up as .avi files with video icons. None of
the video players that I have can play them. gspot doesn't recognize
them, and neither does Producer. The originator of these files is out of
business and long gone - but if I could use them it would save me a lot
of effort.

What can I do to get these demo files working on my Treo?

Try using TCPMP. It is a free open source video player for Palm that is truely awesome. It handles many native formats incl .avi files with several different codecs incl divx, xvid, mpeg, etc. URL at
http://corecodec.org/projects/tcpmp/

Download TCPMP as suggested and see if it will play them. If not, there is a
method of converting them to a palm-compatible format. Get back if they
won't play.

TCPMP --- WOW! What a great freeware product - I've already bought
Kinoma, which is also nice because it permits conversion of various
formats into palm-compatible on the PC desktop.

The problem with TCPMP is that I cannot get these clips to load onto the
Palm or play on the PC (with Windows Media Player, Jet, VLC) - it's as
though they use some weird codec. They are videos shot through a
microscope, done for us by a service that's no longer around - I'd love
to use them. Once again, they appear as a video with the suffix .avi --
so...?

In Windows XP (I don't know about earlier versions) you can right click
on the avi, select "properties" and get the information regarding which
codec the movie uses. Go to the second tab, and then the "advanced"
button. The exact text may be different (my Windows is in Swedish), but
you should be able to get the needed codec information that way anyway.

You will probably need to convert the files to a format that the palm can
read such as xvid (which is to video what mp3 is to audio, a highly
compressed format). The (excellent) freeware program which converts video
files is called Virtualdub. You can download Virtualdub on:
http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/stable/
(download latest build 18303)

Download virtualdub, open it and use File>Open to see if it will open the
video file. If it does, I can explain to you how to convert it to be read on
a palm.

Have you tried The Core Pocket Multimedia Player (TCPMP)?

Right - a nice app, too. But nothing I could find recognizes those .avi
files on the PC, so I can't even get them loaded onto the Palm.

It was a time of great turmoil. The strong preyed on the weak, dogs
and cats lived together. One voice cried out in the wilderness: Ike

You don't load them onto the Palm, you load them onto the Palm's SD
card. Get yourself a nice SD card with a lot of storage capacity -- at
least 512MB and a card reader. Stick the reader into a USB port and
stick the card into the reader. It will show up in Windows Explorer
(not Internet Explorer) as a removable drive. Copy your .avi files to
the card using Windows Explorer. Stick the card into your Treo's SD
card slot and play your files using TCPMP.
