Hi,

my friend wants to upgrade from an ATI rage 128 card. He has a Cyrix III 656MHz pc. Please don't ask me why he bought a piece of junk like that!!!

Anyway, there are two cheap cards I can choose from which I am quite sure would be better than his existing card.

Radeon 7000 64MB AGP RP VO @ 27 pounds
or
GeForce 4 MX440SE 64MB AGP VO @ 33.50 pounds

Which would be better value for money? It's mainly for 3D games the upgrade is being made.

Thanks a lot for your help.

The MX440 would be a better card, but he'd need a better CPU to get any performance out of it.

Why not get a GF2 GTS, it would be a lot cheaper than the GF4 due to the false marketing of the GF4 MX cards, and would provide only a little bit less performance which on a cyrix would make no difference. Also, im not sure about you but I would hate to buy a 'tuned down' card, the thought of wasting all of those features that have simply been deactivated. With the GF2 the card is pulling its full potwntial, and for me that makes it much better.

First of all, upgrade your CPU/MB/RAM

If you have plan of upgrading them soon, then buy Radeon 8500/8500LE 64 MB. Otherwise a GF2 MX400 will be enough. Don't get R7000 since it doesn't have T&L engine and your CPU is very weak

I'm smelling what you're all cooking.

The only thing is that, when I had a p233 I stuck a voodoo2 in it I could play counterstrike.

So surely with one of these cards there'll be some improvement. This was just a small favour for a friend that's all, I just wanted to know, GeForce or Radeon.

I guess the final answer is GeForce because of the T&L.

A GeForce2 MX400 will be enough. Since it has T&L engine, then it will be better than R7000 for a slow CPU. A GF4 MX440-SE will have no benefit over GF2 MX400
