hi, i was wondering if there is a significant performance gap between the gf3 and gf4. i'm in the market for a new vid card and i'm looking for something for game like Counter-Strike, BF1942, and C&C:Generals. i'm leaning towards a gf3 because i'm not into 3dmarks and stuff. However, if there is a really big performance increase from the gf3 to the gf4 then i'll probably get a gf4 card instead.

More about : geforce3 geforce4

Get the RADEON 9500. You can overclock it to the 9700. Too easy too pass up. Check it out. See me earlier thread on Do I have an ATI Radeon 9700 PRO or 9700??

You can check out the performance of the cards here...

I have Pentium 4 1.8ghz and a Geforce 3 Ti500 card and it plays BF1942 really well. I can play UT2003 at decent resolutions with it but I don't use fsaa or af. I'm probably going to upgrade the card when Doom 3 comes out because I think I'll need more horsepower.

Hey Sumotori,
My Bro-in-law and I both use the Gigabyte 7vrxp mobo, he has 256Mb of Ram I have 512. He runs a GF3 Ti200 and I run a GF4 Ti4200 128Mb. His 3dmark score is around 7200 mine is about 10 000. Not that big of a difference. He runs BF1942, UT2K3, America's Army and GTA3 without any problems whatsoever. So the GF3 would probably suffice if you're not looking for bragging rights.
In your shoes I would look at getting a Radeon 9500 Pro because it's Directx 9 hardware compatible and still affordable. Whatever you do don't get a GF4MX because the GF3 outperforms it. Happy shopping!

Besides benchmarking scores, I don't think there's that big a difference between a GF2 and a GF4. Yes, a GF2. I returned my GF4 since the performance increase was rather dissapointing compared to a GF2 Pro.

I wouldn't buy either. Buy a Radeon 9500 Pro, 9700, or 9700 Pro if you want a good card.

what arretium said is not true

you can overclock a 9500pro to be faster (its already faster than a GF4 TI4600 and cheaper) but you cant overclock a 9500 to a 9700. its impossible, the cardsare completely different.

stop spreading bullshhit arretium

Either way nothing is guarenteed with overclocking or a bios flash so I don't recommmend it.

Yes the 9500 Pro is a better buy than any GeForce card on the market though.

thx for your replies fellas. what is the difference between a 128MB Radeon 9500 Pro retail and oem. I read that the clock speeds are slower on the oem version. is this true?
February 15, 2003 10:24:28 PM

It really depends on where you buy it. For the most part it seems that the clock speeds are all standard for the 9500 pro. This might not be true for other OEM cards though. The main difference will be the warranty. Others won't ship with the cables, cd's and manual. Some will. Some will ship with some of it.
