My mic doesnt work please help

im woundering why my mic wont work i need some help i have a dell but dont know wich kind i bought it from a friend

what operating system are you running?
have you plugged the mic in the pink jack? that's usually the microphone jack.
have you checked the volume control if your mic shows up in the 'recording device' window? (in win 7, right click on the volume icon in the taskbar, click on 'recording devices'.)
does any other mic work with you pc?
