i wonder whether the hot air actually manages to get out through thoes holes on the pci slot or whether most of it just hits the metal and rises.

Seems like even the fx had a better idea, but i could be wrong. Just judging by the pics.

Actually, no. The card had to be thicker for the large cooler, but the holes in the back are for ventilation in either direction. Why even bother? Because the card was going to take up the adjacent slot anyway, they might as well make a plate to cover it. That plate adds a connector, as you can see.

Did they need to make the fan so tall? Probably not, but I'm guessing it's a long life fan, which would have to be thick in order to support the larger bearing design. Also I believe that's an AGP Pro slot card? AGP Pro cards also require the first PCI slot be left open, to send all the power for that slot to the card. If you need to leave that PCI slot unused, you might as well BLOCK that slot, and what better way to block that slot than with a longer life fan?

So you see, it all adds up. You need to block the slot, you want the best fan possible for durability, you'd like a place to mount that extra connector, viola.

Yeah, the connector is for the stereoscopic glasses. It comes with the FireGL I'm considering, which also takes up 2 slots and is AGPpro50. I still think the glasses are cool, but theyr goofy at the same time. Cool technology, but you look like a main character from Revenge of the Nerds.

- You need a licence to buy a gun, but they'll sell anyone a stamp (or internet account) ! RED GREEN  GA to SK

Yes, it HAS to take up 2 slots if it's AGP Pro50, that's in the power requirements. So as long as it does, they might as well put a real fan on there, instead of these crappy standard video fans (which are noisey and failure prone). They didn't have to comprimise on the fan when they had the extra space anyway.
