[citation][nom]cbxbiker61[/nom]A $200 Windows netbook is just the start.....What's it cost for productivity? Let's say $99 for Office school edition. Anti-virus software? probably $20-50. Now you're at $320-$350 whereas a Linux netbook that does more...costs less.Of course you could use Open Source software Like OpenOffice on the Windows machine for no cost...but it seems almost silly to do that when you've already decided to start down the toll road road to Microsoftville.[/citation]
Antivirus is free, WordPad is free, OpenOffice is free, document readers are free (for almost any format). If anyone plans heany usage on netbook theybetter look at full size notebooks, I don't get it how someone plans to do DEVELOPING on 10" screen (as an example). It's fine for quick something on the move, and that's it.. Like I've said several times - let's be real people! Oh, also, online Office applications are free, just as Google docs and such. So I don't see any extra cost beyond initial 200$ for netbook with Windows 7.
And you ask why Windows than? Simply because this is a KNOWN TERRITORY for 99% of people, while Linux is not. you know the apps, and know how to install and manage both apps and OS (or at least you have more chances knowing it than on Linux). If I want to do something on Windows, and I need an app, I need like 2-3 minutes to Google it, find, read user reviews, download, and install. No compiling, thinking if it will work and so on.. I'd never change my Windows expirience with any other OS, just because of those few simple reasons. Call me lazy or conservative, but most people are both
[citation][nom]jonnydough[/nom]Ahh, I get it now. Microsoft wants us to use Internet Explorer for browsing the web on the latest tech frenzy. Netbooks and IE8 here we come. I see a class-action lawsuit coming already. Mozilla Firefox = 1 of 3 applications. Internet Explorer = Free application! Run another! This is why it's hip to be a hater...of M$.[/citation]
If it was possible, I would be first person in the world starting a class action against people starting class actions for stupidities like this. Am I starting a class action against Firefox because I can't run ActiveX on it? Am I starting a class action against Apple because I can't install IE8 on it? How about starting a class action against Google because I can't read my Vodatel e-mails on Gmail?
If you don't like it, buy something else. You have choice, buy a netbook with Linux and use Firefox on it. Hell, it will be cheaper. When you buy netbook with Win7 Starter says clearly on the box that you're limited. OK, so they give a "free" bonus if you use embeded apps like Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer. Should we file a class action because they aren't counting Print Spooler as an application? Or how about Windows Explorer, maybe I want to use another app to browse my files? And MS is giving it for free, I would forbid them to do so, I want to have option to pay 50$ for my file-browser!
You're right, it's so hip to be an MS hater, and still being an MS user at the same time. I wonder why you all MS haters don't quit using MS technologies completely and RIGHT AWAY. You have alternatives for every possible software in existance, from OS up to a simple text reader. Go and be gone..
Oh, and if someone is wondering, I actually LIKE having all those apps in my Windows, even if I don't use them. I don't mind sacrificing few GB of disk space (costing me 1$ altogether) after I've spent 200, 500 or 1000$ for everything else.
