Now that I am 99% sure that the 33.6 PC Card modem I am using to access the internet on my Compaq PC Companion is hardware based I have another question for the learned people on this forum. The Internet is extremely slow on this device, is there anything I can do about? I have double checked the dial-up networking setting are correct but it is very slow, as an example it takes 3 minutes to load the Yahoo! home page. If anyone can offer me some advice on how to speed up my internet access on here it would be much appreciated. One last question, can I configure the MaxMTU parameters on CE? I have a registry editor so editing the registry is not a problem.

PCMCIA is a different story. Not sure if the "hardware based" vs. "software based" distinction would apply. You should have said that in the beginning. What type of latop is it? If you're running a 33.6 modem with an older laptop no wonder you're having excrutiatingly slow surfing performance.

It's a Windows CE based handheld not a laptop.

Those things run DOS? Or is it just a "DOS" window?

No, I am connecting to MSN via a dial-up connection. I was just referring to what the modem's manual says in an attempt to determine if it was hardware based.

The modem says it's a 33.6, but are you actually getting a 33.6 connection? Depending on where you're dialing from, you may not be getting the full potential of your modem. Also, if you're used to 56K or broadband elsewhere, 33.6 will seem VERY slow when you use it.

I'm not sure if the modem is connecting at 33.6 or not because Windows CE does not report the speed at which you are connected at for a dial-up connection. I am using a 56K connection on my desktop. At this I point I'm probably just going to get a 56K modem modem for this device and hopefully it'll be faster.
