Any difference in performance....and if so, any way to flash the BIOS?

They are the same card. It was renamed the 9100 for marketiting reasons. There could be some small differences, but I don't think they are anything that requires you to buy the R9100.

8500's and 8500Le ranged in GPU clock/memory clock from 275/275 down to 200/166. The retail 8500's having the higher speeds.

Every 9100 that I have seen has been clocked at 250/230 which means it's the same as a pretty decent 8500LE but not as good as the retail 8500's.

99% is great, unless you are talking about system stability

The R9100 is slightly slower than the R8500LE (in other words, all the 8500's).

I'm about to buy an R9100 because here in the land of Oz, Sapphire R9100 retails for $170AU but the cheapest R8500 I can find is $250AU. The Sapphire R9100 runs at 250/230 definitely (the 128mb version is 250/200) There are a lot of different versions of the R8500 on the Sapphire site, the slowest being 250/250. However, because only one of the R8500s listed mentions Dual RAMDACs, It probably depends on whats more important to you. FPS or the second RAMDAC. For me, the choice is clear since $170AU is quite a difference from $250AU.

And btw cefoskey now I have to change my sig since its not unique lol...

Saphires 9100 and their most common 8500LE have exactly the same clock rates:
250/230 for the 64MB version (good overclockable memory)
250/200 for the 128MB version (with sucky 5ns memory).

Really the only difference other than clock, is the video smoothing capabilities in the card's bios, however this can be flashed from what I've read here and in the ATI support/fan sites. Depends on what you do with your computer, and whether you want to flash your bios ( a little tircky). regular 8500 would be better, then the LE and 9100 run about neck and neck.
Go for the price and availibility that suites you.

I was just about to make a post about this.....the 8500/8500LE vs. 9100....

I couldnt find any comparisons of the 9100 vs 8500 or 8500LE or even to any GeForce line of cards.....

I heard the 9100 is the same as a 8500...(not LE)....heres the thing..

I can get a Saphire Radeon 8500LE 128MB w/ TVO + DVI Version for $149 CDN......
I can also get a Saphire Radeon 9100 128MB w/ TVO + DVI for $129 CDN...

This is at the same store.....now......ive also heard you can Overclock the 9100 to eyond the performance of the Retail 8500's......so thats why i havent baught one yet....i dont wanna get the 9100 to only later find out the 8500LE would've been better to OC......

Anyone got any links showign the performance of the 9100 vs other cards ?

The 9100is availible from NCIX.com for $114 CDN, the 8500LE WAS also that price but has been taken off the site in lieu of the 9100. Just FYI.
Also, the 8500 is pretty much the exact same as the 9100,and I would assume they share overclocking features, but I'm not sure, depends really on the memory they use,as the core should be the same.

No, I looked up the clock speeds myself from Saphire. The 9100 has the same clock speeds as their least expensive 8500LE. Not the retail 8500, the 8500LE. And it looks like the rest of the hardware is the same too.

Their 9100 uses the same memory as their 8500LE, so it's not more overclockable than their 8500LE. Neither are better, they're the same.

Remember that the 9100 does have the Video Smoothing feature, which can be added to an 8500LE by flashing the bios. Just FYI,that's the only diff. I've read about.
The only reason I mention the memory modules is because I've read alot of people complaining they got different memory on sapphire cards. Just saying keep your eyes open.

Yes, a lot of people have gone against my advice and bought the 128MB card expecting 3.3 or 3.6ns memory, only to find it has 5ns memory. I tell them that to begin with, but they still say "I'll take my chances". That's kind of like telling them not to play rutian roulet with a single shot pistol! "But my friend did it with a 6 xhot revolver and nothing happened to him". Yeh.

There's a reason the 128MB card comes with memory clocked at 200MHz.

I got a powercolor 9100 128mb 250/250 and used radedit to edit the bios to 275/275. so i got a retail 8500 128mb for little to nothing. but sapphire runs there cards alot slower, especially there 128mb versions which do come with 5ns ram.

If you ever stop learning, YOU'ER DEAD!!

About 2 months ago i had my old Radeon LE and decided to upgrade. The day the 9000 came out i bought it thinking it would be leaps and bounds better. Well the 9000 non pro cards absolutely blow, in fact they cannot be overclocked at all (it froze my machine every time), i read that they are locked. So i RMAed it and got an 8500LE and im really happy. Then the 9100 came out and i was thinking "man i should have waited", but i guess they are essentially the same.

What i want to know is for anyone with a 9100: is it locked too?

Go to the rage3d.com forums for a BIOS. Make sure you use the right one for the amount of memory your 8500 has (64 MB or 128 MB)

I flashed my 8500 to a 9100 for fun. The bios is newer, so it should be more stable and indeed the card seems more stable now, although it was an old 8500 to begin with and had one of the first BIOSes available.

Then I overclocked it to 285/285 and now I call it a Radeon 9100 PRO :p
