Hello, I just recently built my system with an Asus A7N8X mobo, I was going to wait a few weeks to buy a new Graphics Card, so I thought I would just use my old Voodoo 3 card. Problem is it doesnt fit. The Voodoo3 says AGP on it, but doesnt even come close to fitting in the AGP slot on the mobo. So now I am wondering if I need a AGP 8x card or will a AGP 4x card like the ATI AIW 8500DV work?

This mobo will work with AGP 4x and 8x cards. Using AGP 2x cards (like your Voodoo 3) might damage the card or mobo

Yeah, most AGP 2x cards operate at 3.3v, and AGP 4x can only be run at 1.5v. So installing an AGP 2x card in an AGP 4x slot will fry the mobo.

A "key" has been added to the slot to prevent that card and many other AGP2x cards from fitting, because they don't meet the electrical specs for that board. AGP4x and newer cards work.

The last GeForce card I ever owned, I put into an old Asus slot A mobo...it ran for less than a minute before it crashed, after that, I got the R2D2 beeps that translate into fried graphics card. Didint hurt the mobo though...

The thing is to try and get a Universal 8X agp slot.
My GA7VAX 'gaming' board does accept the 2x cards as well as 4x and 8x, whereas the Asus boards were 4 and 8 only.
Now yes I usually go with Asus baords, but with the Gigabyte being the most flexible it was a no-brainer then (now I wish I had an Nforce2, but so be it). The main thing is to look at the specs for the board you have or want to get from their website, it'll let you know if it's universal, 2.0, or just 4/8x.

All the more reason to go PCI-X or PCI-EX for your next card. 4 Radeon 9900Pros all running simultaneously. Mmmm true surround gamming 3 panorama and one above or below for maps/controls.

Anywhoo, there are 8x agp slots which will take older cards, but it appears they are the minority.
