Tournament report from Laurie Golding follows:
***UKCQ 2005 REPORT***

As the bright May sun rose on an uncharacteristically warm spring
morning, the VtES players of Burton-on-Trent began to stir. The
fatigue of countless late-night games against the visiting players
from around the UK and Denmark held fast, combined with vestigial
hangovers from introducing their guests to the wide selection of
locally brewed ales and lagers. But the promise of a full day of
competitive gaming spurred all from their repose, helped in no small
part by the sublime aroma of bacon, sausage and eggs wafting through
the hazy morning air.

Upon arriving at the bustling 'Beer and Pretzels Games Weekend',
local Prince Laurie Goulding set about organising the eager mob. An
administrative cock-up the week before had left him in sole-charge
of the tournament, and like hell was he going to miss out on the fun
of playing against the cream of the UK crop! His delegated Head
Judge John Miles arrived and began registering the growing crowd of
players, while Laurie attempted to orchestrate a complete
rearrangement of the tables and chairs in a truly 'Laurel and Hardy'-
esque manner.

With all 32 players entered into the system, the first round began
worryingly close to its scheduled time, seemingly in spite of the
best efforts of those players who had insisted on wandering off
around the rest of the convention building. Competition was fierce
from the start, and many hopes of qualifying for the European
Nationals were dashed by early defeats. As the seating was shuffled
and the second round began, it became obvious that stealthy bleeds
were fast becoming the order of the day, with very few other deck
types being used.

Even in this highly competitive environment, there was a distinct
atmosphere of camaraderie - players were commended for good combos
(even by their targets!) and those who were ousted early were often
to be found buying each other drinks in the bar, discussing their
tactics and even playing friendly rematches! With so many other
games on offer at the convention, there was something to interest
everyone who had had enough of VtES for the day, and event
organisers Spirit Games were on hand dishing out free bags of
pretzels and drinks vouchers.

As the third round drew to a close, most players began to pack up
their cards, knowing full well that they had not made it to the
final but still determined to get some more games in before the end
of the day. Laurie and John announced the names of the eight players
who had scored high enough to qualify for the European Nationals in
Budapest in November - Anthony Coleman (London UK), Brian White
(Cambridge UK), Steve Read (Portsmouth UK), Mikkel Petersen (Aarhus
Denmark), David Steel (Berkeley CA USA), Hugh Angseesing (Cheltenham
UK) and John Hickman (Reading UK) all claimed their UKCQ-2005
tshirts. Also, special mention should be given to Matt Green
(Stourbridge UK) who gave up his qualifying place to the next
highest ranking player Paul Reid-Bowen (Westbury UK) because of
prior commitments.

As the final round got underway, the tension began to mount and all
eyes were on the clock. With the interesting blend of decks in play,
it would be down to the wire - Matt's Malkavian Network, Hugh's
Dominate Gangrel, Anthony's Warghouls, David's Stealthy Malkavians
and Mikkel's Sabbat Brujah were all in the running to claim that
final victory... but ultimately Hugh scooped up 4 VPs, conceding
only one to David before ousting him.

After a celebratory curry at the amusingly named 'Balti Towers',
Laurie hosted yet more friendly games back home, until the twelve
remaining players began to sink into an exhausted slumber around
4am. It had been what everyone had hoped for - a full day of
exciting and competitive VtES! But the Burton-on-Trent players all
vowed never to let it be known that they had all finished near the
bottom of the scoreboard, in joint 27th place...

Pictures from the event have been posted in the Photos section of
the Group.

Was a great tourny, many thanks to Laurie for sorting it, and even more
thanks to his father for the most timely and appreciated cooked
breakfast ive ever had :O) close second for brekky goes to the bacon
rolls al la Mike Nudd on the Saturday!

Very good play in the final Hugh, and a very neat deck, I'm glad this
time we avoided each other all day as most tournies we seem to spend
our time knocking seven shades out of each other :O)

Was more than slightly annoying to be x table KS bled out in the
final.. but hey... the piglings can look scary, I wouldnt have minded
so much if he had at least gained a VP from it or a beer or
something..... not that im bitter, no, not at all, my shrink says ill
be fine after a few weeks of counselling :O)
