I've been looking around trying to find technically what the difference is between these two boards. Can someone please elighten me?

All of the 128 megabyte 9500 non-pro red boards came with a 256 bit memory bus like the 9700 PRO, to the best of my knowledge.

I have heard of instances where the newer black boards have come with the 128 bit memory bus and other black boards that come with the 256 bit bus.

Regardless of the color of the board, if the 4 memory chips are in a straight line, it's a 128 bit memory bus

If the 4 memory chips are placed in an "L" shape, the board has a 256 bit memory bus.

From what I understand though, the newer the card, the more likely that it has the 128 bit memory configuration.

Other than the memory configuration, other factors really aren't important. Some people have claimed that the newer black boards are less likely to work properly when enabling the 8 pipelines with the softmod or soldering, but that's pretty much heresay as there are no concrete numbers to scrutinize. Some people have reported success with enabling pipelines on black boards, so it's not impossible.

I am at a point where I would place an order on Newegg right now for a 9500 if I knew I could soft mod it to a 9700... but without more advise and info, I am reluctant to do so.

And by the way, maybe it has been only this last week, but when I search the forum for good data, I do find some good information, but with all of the BS and flaming, I cannot blame anyone for wanting to start a fresh post.

So I am brousing Newegg as we speak--on my extended desktop monitor--for I have been liberated too--and which of the 9500 cards are the ones to buy?

And with the 9800 out, any guessing on how prices might drop in the next few months, even on the 9700? I can wait a month or so if it will be worth it...

hahaha.. be nice

there has been alot of flaming , but thats because we have had alot of people making stupid threads asking questions that have been answered like, on the same page even

as to you question about the red and black pcb: i have no clue. i have read quite a few places that have claimed the L shaped memory does actually have the 256 memeory bus. but who knows?

if im going to give information on this, it would be to save up for an extra week and just buy a 9700 non-pro. they arent that expensive at all, considering the performance differnce between the 9500 and 9700

I think you need to look up the word irony in a dictionary as much as I need to figure out WTF 1337 means. I do not recall bad mouthing this forum; I do enjoy being here, and I do profit from the knowledge base. But was sympathizing with those who start fresh threads on topics where a good portion of responces contain both BS and flames--and not BS about computers, but the old fashioned off topic kind--enough to make me deserving of such an unjust and crass critique? And I even enjoy reading through the flames on occasion. But does making an observation truly qualify as "talking [-peep-]" on this forum. Indeed, if you constitute my responce as being both "bad mouthing" and "talking [-peep-]," then perhaps you ought to better define such terms and end your ill-mannered reign of hypocrisy.

From what I understand you can get a partial boost soft moding the black card. That said though, you may want to choose something else. I ordered one from newegg, popped it in my Nforce 2 motherboard and suddenly my PC wouldn't boot. In fact, it killed the 12V supply. Disconnect the seperate +12V lead to the video card and my +12V supply came back up. I checked and heard many similar stories. According to what I've read, the BIOS on the black 9500 card wasn't compatible with an Nforce motherboard. Needless to say I had to return the card on my own dime.
