Lately a fan in my computer has been loud for periods of time - I believe it is the fan on my gpu (asus gf4 ti 4400). I used some canned air to dust off all my fans and I took the graphics card out of the case so I could dust its fan off really well - but the noise seems to persist - it kind of sounds like maybe the fan is struggling to turn or maybe the fan has some sort of obstruction (other than air). Does anyone know what a possible solution to this problem would be? Thanks.

I think most of us has had this problem before, and the only thing I can tell you is to listen, track it down, and kill it. Luckily for you, you own an Nvidia product so the fan can be easily removed with push pins and replaced.

I have the same problem with my BFG Ti4600 at the moment. It's brand new but it sounds like a prop plane trying to start up when I first start the computer. Your description of it struggling to turn is pretty accurate. After a while it stops and just makes a high pitched whine. It's a bit louder than my CPU fan so I'd put it at roughly 35db-40db.

I questioned whether it was getting enough power at first, but I have a 400W antec so I don't think that's it.

Maybe that's the way they are. It's too loud for my taste but I'm returning the card anyways so I don't care. I just needed something temporarely.

Anyone have a quiet one and what brand is it?

its probably the bearing in the fan. this happened to me before a couple of times... and you shoiuld be careful its a good way to fry your video card

is it still under warranty? if so , send it back. if not, i would definately get a new fan and mount it. you can find custom fans for GF4s on the internet. if youdont have a credit card or theres no paypal (or watever) option, you could get a nice custom CPU fan and mount it manually onto the cards heatsink

it might require you to modify the card somewhat tho. check the warranty first !

D...the Zahlman heat pipe fit's your card better then any I've seen. Ever consider it?

I don't know where you live, but most of the good auto parts stores out here carry a mechanic's stethoscope for like twelve dollars. A stethoscope is REALLY helpful at isolating noises.

this may not be accurate (so no flaming me haha) -
but in reference to OCing graphics cards I heard that they would simply turn off if they got too warm and if that is true than would it not hold true that if my fan failed the card would just turn off and my system would freeze or whatever and NOT fry the card? Like I said - I don't know if this is true at all. Thanks for the responses so far though.

It seems that I should have 3 years warranty through asus (according to their website). It would however suck royally to have to wait for my gpu to come back b/c I don't have a spare graphics card (these things always take forver). Has anyone any experience dealing with asus on warranty issues before?

Asus is considered to be a good company, and their card and mobos are a little pricier than some otheres, but i really like Asus.. dont think youll have a problem. ECS, hahaha, need an ECS rma? GOOD LUCK

well, from my experience in overclocking your right the card usually does freeze before it gets so hot that you fry it. the video cards dont turn themselves off by themselves as you said tho
usually it goes like - adjust clocks higher until it freezes or you get artifacts -> lower clocks until stable.. if it freezes you usually reboot so your card isnt under any gaming pressure and cools off, and most cards tat make you wanna overclock are mid range models and dont have the fastest ram etc so they dont go high enuff to create temperatures like that

if you overclock your high end card , the parts are of quality enuff to reach speeds where heat could cause damage.
i think GeneticWeapon said he fried an ATI 8500 once or something i cant remember.

great news about teh warranty. if you dont wanna go without using your computer for a while, maybe you should consider a custom Heatsink-Fan and just not game until you get it to keep the temps down eh?
