And...that was with the cheesey, stock HSF. Imagine what a GOOD cooling solution could do!...and the memory running at 9800 speeds!....for $200 dollars!(stops dry humping computer desk)...I'm [-peep-] stoked about this. now I want one for sure!

My Score..<A HREF="http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=6258104" target="_new">http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=6258104</A>..Pic's of my pc before I pimped it.<A HREF="http://www.lochel.com/THGC/html/Genetic_Weapon.html" target="_new">http://www.lochel.com/THGC/html/Genetic_Weapon.html</A>

I like the little HSF it's cute and daintey. :tongue:

Yeah it's mounted with epoxy, so welcome to the freezer if that's what you're gonna do.

Well all knew the core had potential, unfortunately the memory seems to be mid-grade memory. I think B3D or one of the other reviews I posted mentioned that the Samsung was 300mhz and could realistically only be pushed to 350mhz, so therefore, lesser memory modules than the 9800, so don't expect that much headroom, but 50mhz is still respectable, just imagine with better memory or DDRII. Mmmm Toasty!

Anywhoo, should be a fun card for the tweakers, and like I said under current stock settings you may even have been able to run a heatsink without a fan, which would be my pref. (duraibility, reliability, noise, etc), but the small quiet hsf is fine for me, who will only push the card once it's outgrown the current games, and as long as it doesn't sig. increase case Temps (yeah I know I could add another fan, but I like using stealth fans, and don't want to go to things that impact my movie/tv viewing in my room.

However that's cool, maybe the card itself has good life, and Hercules will give us a wicked twekers card, with or course a Blue LED so I know what's smoking. :wink:

That´s an amazing overclock, the 130nm process is doing it´s thing.

But can it do 530mhz for, say, 17/7?

<font color=red>I´m starting to feel like a real computer consultant.</font color=red>

I will be getting one for sure, I will check the card I get and report some info for you. Just in case you're on the fence, you can wait. For me it's pretty much a sure thing. ASAFP!!
Just FYI.

BTW, did you notice that with that remarkable overclock (on stock gear) it beat the 9500Pro in many categories? Interesting, once again, WITHOUT the power draw of the 9500s.

[H]ardOcp overclocked to 567 mHz!

Maybe I'm not so disappointed with this card. Even hugely overclocked, it doesn't approach a 9700 PRO in most benchmarks, but it tells me there is a lot of potential in ATI's .13 process.

Okay this is BAAAD for nVidia. How bad-ass would an R350 on .13 be with faster DDR2? R9900 @ 500 mhz core maybe?

Okay, I recant my concerns regarding ATI, for now. .13 obviously works very well for them. Now, it's only a question of yields and bringing the product to market on time and in sufficient quantities.

I'm impressed with the overclocked 9600pro as shown on [H]ardOcp's site especially given my limited case/power supply; I don't want to try to run the 9500pro or 9700 pro now since they require extra power. It would be nice to know the actual difference in power requirements though...

Yeah and remember ALL without a power connection or a MONSTER HSF.
I know I'm in the minority (not the first time) but I am ok with the perf. It not really meant to compete with the 9700.
The headroom is SWEET, and I will try a little overclocking when I get mine (but not the freezer HSF replacement until I can't run then current games). Funny thing is that I will likely crank it up to benchmark it with 3Dmk03 and 01, but then run it at stock untill doom comes out, then OC it a bit (likely 1/2 of max +50/75mhz, likely running the memory just outside stock). Anywhoo, I'm just Jonzin' waiting for it.
As for the 0.13 process yeah I think ATI went the right way about it and according to one of the reviews there is a place to mount the power connectors for future boards, which would likely have DDRII. Imagine SWEET DDRII memory, and a 9800 HSF on a card. Sounds like headroom to me. I still hope Nvidia stays close or even slightly passes them, but I want it to be a close race, and still want a 3rd party decide my commitment to a particular board right now (my 4th from ATI, they've always offered what I NEEDED at a good price when it came time to buy) but as you said before I think good strong competition builds SWEET cards, without it I doubt we'd have the 9500/9700/9800 which right now is very nice.

The Future's so Bright, I gotta wear Shaaaades! :cool:

You're living proof of people like me who want a power consumption chart for latest cards. I asked Lars, he said he will try to find info, look in the official 9600PRO thread in this forum for more info!

If I had to really admit the one true positive thing from the 9600PRO, it'd be like you said, the 0.13m process. I am really impressed. Not only is it ATi's first time, but they have allowed a stock retail crap card become overclocked madly on retail cooling which looks like the ones used for old Voodoo IIIs. I am most impressed. nVidia has problems, serious ones. This card likely runs at 30ºC or MUCH less, while the FX5800 Ultra, runs at over 60ºC, same process. Sad.

Good job ATi, damn good job, you surprised me here a lot, and I hope you can master it soon for a 9900PRO.

Sorry that was supposed to read, 'I've ALWAYS SAID...'

Just reminding Eden we were originally on the same page about the 9600 and what we wanted from it, but it appears that the first blush figures scared Eden away from power consumption concerns. Oh well, just wanted to say some of us still keep the faith of 'effecient' design.

Sorry again about the whacked typo, I was typing fast before going to work (at Triple TIME, thank you Easter Holidays, and for ONCE my union!)

I don't think we spoke here on our expectations Grape!
Efficient design or not, 0.13m reduces transistor size, 100M transistors should not have been a hard task, as they had that before, and with shrunk size it only is an advantage. Why reduce amount when you already have increased your overall yeild amount with the 0.13m transistor size?!

I was looking for that discussion I had with members earlier about power consumption (sorry if I thought you're roll was more than just <b><i> 'Yeah right, ATi's upcoming cards will be relatively low power and high performing.
I will never buy a card if it draws 120W, seriously.'</b></i>

It's interesting to revisit your comment when someone said they were going to go with a 9700 instead due to price reductions in the; <i> Holy crap! Catalyst 3.2, major performance boosts!</i> thread. I bumped because it's rather prophetic.

anyone wants to try out a gfFX cooling system on the radeon9600pro card? how much could we clock it up to get similar heat problems? then we would see how much bether the radeon really is:D

on the other hand.. how much do we have to clock down a gfFX to run with the radeon9600pro cooler?:D

Very true. You can definitely tell it was made for a different manufacturing process (SilK, or "low k"). It'd have to go to the performance of a GeForce 3 series at best, I'm sure, to be able to use that kind of cooler. We definitely don't want that.

EDIT: Spelling mistake, it said "sue" instead of "use"

You can help. Just send money to the bad motherboard relief fund, for those suckered into a KT166 and SDRAM with their new Athlon...<P ID="edit"><FONT SIZE=-1><EM>Edited by mac404 on 04/19/03 08:52 PM.</EM></FONT></P>

OK I'll do a little DEEPER search today during the day. I did find another mention of power concerns in another post I will bump it NOW, and look for that other one I posted when I'm done work (once again at triple time, WooHoo!) But these are the reasons I thought we were on the same page about power concerns anywhoo, now maybe you see why I thought that;

Here's the one I found right now (Re: Geforce FX);

<i>The problem lies not in here, it lies in the fact this is UNNECESSARY cooling.
The FX5600 Ultra, god's dried up fruit, runs at 46ºC, about 10ºC hotter than a FULL LOAD Radeon 9700PRO, according to the results tested on the OCA ultimate edition R9700PRO, when actively cooled by some 120mm fan.
Yet the chip runs at 0.15m.

Then nVidia, according to Ace's, preaches about GPUs using 120W as being inevitable. Forgive the language but what kind of utter bullcrap is this? ATi has their best chips around 60W, and the transition to .13m will ensure a drop to 40W easily.

</i>

<b>Also</b> note the last quote (considering that the 9600P can reach 563 with stock cooling);

<i>
Something tells me that this 500MHZ clock is a fluke, but I could be wrong.
Even nVidia seems to realize something did not make sense with their clock speeds </i>

Found the original post with that quoe, it is now the 3rd to last post of the : 'Who here has a Geforce FX?' thread.

Anywho, thus ends the basic quest, but I beleive alot of us had this discussion about the 9600P for some time. And as I said that's my main concern.

All just FYI, since you asked where it all came from.
