I'm building a new PC currently and will finish before the end of this month. Much as I am not a fan of metro in any way I will likely want to run my new build on Windows 8 for the advances in boot times and so on (speed is paramount). However, 8 obviously doesn't release for another few months so in the meantime I will need to install Windows 7.
My question is, is there any method by which I can upgrade to 8 when it comes out at a reduced cost for buying Windows 7 now. I understand that for OEMs there is an upgrade system, where new PCs shipped between a certain time will have upgrade keys. For me though, building my own system is there any way in which I won't have to dish out full price for Windows 7 and then again Windows 8 not long after.
I haven't bought the hard drive part of my system yet so I've no idea if you can buy one pre-installed from which I can get the code. Also I'll be putting the operating system on a Samsung 830 SSD anyway.
There's no promotion specific to new Win7 buyers, but there will be a limited-time upgrade offer for $40 (until 1/31/13) to upgrade Win XP, Vista, or 7 to Windows 8. This will start on the date Windows 8 is released (10/26/12).
I have seen no windows 8 features that would incent me to change.
As to speed, that will not be an issue since you are using a ssd.
Even then, why boot at all? Just tell the pc to sleep(using s3 sleep state to ram) and you will enter a very low power state in 2 seconds, and wake in 3.
Save your $40 upgrade charge, and use it to increase the size of your ssd.
Larger ssd's are faster.
Ah thanks, I think I have some XP discs laying around so I can install that and then upgrade for the $40 when 8 is released. In the meantime I guess I could use Ubuntu or something to save myself the money, though gaming will probably take a hit or stay on XP and game on that.
Yeah that sounds like a good idea to be fair. I was just thinking of improvements in general speed with Windows 8 but then as you mention I could just pump the money into a 256/512Gb SSD instead and get bigger increases.
Also it would save ever having to go near the heap of crap that is metro.
