I have two computers, one running XP Pro and one running Home. When I start Windows it loads the desktop and then sits there for exactly 1 minute. You cannot open any programs or do anything. After 1 minute, the computer then loads some more things on the start-up. I have narrowed the problem to my DSL connection, because if I leave the modem off and turn on the computer, it starts right up and does not wait. If I turn on the modem and computer, it waits for 1 minute. Is there any way to fix this? I want to be able to turn my modem on and then my computer and not wait.
Create a dummy IP address for your network card. The reason why it takes such a long time is because by default, your NIC is set to search for an IP by a DHCP server. But since you don't have one, it looks for one minute then gives up.
Go to:
• Control Panel
• Network Connections
Right-click Local Area Connection and choose Properties. Then, double-click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)". In the general tab, select "Use the following IP address". In the following fields:
IP Address: 192.168.0.1 (basic IP, doesn't mean anything)
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: leave blank, or 0.0.0.0
Preferred and Alternate DNS server: Leave blank
OK all the boxes, and restart your system, and it should start up quicker.
If you have any problems after setting this, or you get a network setup in the future, you'll need to change this accordingly or set it to "Obtain an IP address automatically" if you get a router that serves as a DHCP server.
