Standby mode: Windows saves all your apps and documents into RAM, turns off power consuming components like the hard disks and monitor, and switches the computer to a low power state. Its much like a warm boot. Any contents of memory and unsaved desktop settings are lost.
You should be careful when using Standby because it doesn't save the memory content. A power failure during Standby would cause the loss of all unsaved data. The advantage to Standby is that the computer awakens quickly from this state.
Hibernate mode: Hibernation is different from Standby. If you experience a power failure, you won't lose any data when the computer is in Hibernation. Windows saves all your apps and documents to the hard drive, and saves the current state information by writing a hibernation file (Hiberfil.sys) which contains the contents of the memory and is thus the same size as the total RAM. This is a snapshot of active memory. When you turn your PC back on, the state, including which applications are running (desktop) and the memory contents are restored to RAM, and you are back to where you were when Hibernation mode started.
Your programs won't run in either case until you are back into a normal power state ... and no, you can't continue downloading while in Standby or Hibernate modes. You could use a Download Manager for downloading files, and then resume any downloads at a later time (if the web site server supports this), such as with Download Accelerator, which is my preference.
You could set up a screensaver, come out of Standby or Hibernate, and then have the screensaver turn on after a specified length of time, say, a minute. But you can't run the screensaver and be in Standby or Hibernate at the same time.
