Hi
I was wondering whats the difference between hibernate and stand by? Does my programs still run if I go to stand by? Would my downloads still continue? If not, is there a way where I can press a button and the screen saver would come on? TIA!

Standby mode: Windows saves all your apps and documents into RAM, turns off power consuming components like the hard disks and monitor, and switches the computer to a low power state. Its much like a warm boot. Any contents of memory and unsaved desktop settings are lost.

You should be careful when using Standby because it doesn't save the memory content. A power failure during Standby would cause the loss of all unsaved data. The advantage to Standby is that the computer awakens quickly from this state.

Hibernate mode: Hibernation is different from Standby. If you experience a power failure, you won't lose any data when the computer is in Hibernation. Windows saves all your apps and documents to the hard drive, and saves the current state information by writing a hibernation file (Hiberfil.sys) which contains the contents of the memory and is thus the same size as the total RAM. This is a snapshot of active memory. When you turn your PC back on, the state, including which applications are running (desktop) and the memory contents are restored to RAM, and you are back to where you were when Hibernation mode started.

Your programs won't run in either case until you are back into a normal power state ... and no, you can't continue downloading while in Standby or Hibernate modes. You <i>could</i> use a Download Manager for downloading files, and then resume any downloads at a later time (if the web site server supports this), such as with <A HREF="http://www.speedbit.com/DAPDL.asp?" target="_new">Download Accelerator</A>, which is my preference.

You could set up a screensaver, come out of Standby or Hibernate, and then have the screensaver turn on after a specified length of time, say, a minute. But you can't run the screensaver and be in Standby or Hibernate at the same time.

I have my screen saver set to 1 minute and I turned off stand-by and hibernate. I was wondering is there a way I could initiate the screen saver by pressing a button? Thanks

Sure. You could use a third-party program like <A HREF="http://www.brianapps.net/hotkeyplus/" target="_new">this</A>. And here's two more <A HREF="http://www.infosavers.com/Downloads/767.html" target="_new">one</A> & <A HREF="http://www.fadsoft.com/UltraKeyboard.htm" target="_new">two</A>. Try 'em all if you wish, and see which one suits you the best.

I make a Lock command shortcut "<b><font color=red>%Windir%\System32\Rundll32.exe User32.dll,LockWorkStation</b></font color=red>" (and assign a shortcut keys such as Ctrl+Shift+L) to lock my comp for long download instead of screen saver.

 Good or Bad have no meaning at all, depends on what your point of view is.

I'm using active key now. As i found that many of the hot key programs have this fault in them: when u command it to go into screen saver when u return hitting keyboard it will prompt for password but if u wake it up with the mouse it wont prompt for a password. But activekey works great for what I want. Thanks for all ur help!
