Laptop Reinstall

I have a dell laptop that is at least 5 years old. Don't use it a whole lot but a few times a week. Went to turn the thing on and received an error saying that a window file was corrupt. I have the I figure I have to reinstall the all the software but not sure which cd to start with or if this will fix the problem. I have the Operating system cd, application cd, and the Drivers and Utilities. Can someone let me know how to go about installing or recommend a good website.

XP?

Run repair install from OS disc.

Too lazy to write the repair guide myself when google search found an existing piece, so just use that for now.

5 years old means it's most likely XP since Vista wasn't launched till January 30,2007.

You can do a repair installation as mentioned above
or boot up with the XP CD to get into the Recovery Console and type: chkdsk r
