Activating the same Win XP twice?

Hey all!

My Dell 2350 desktop came with Win XP.

I've installed the same Win XP onto an ancient laptop(Celeronn 300) to
play around with,
and on the laptop, a message keeps popping up saying I've got 30 days(now
22 days) to
activate XP, otherwise all the features will be disabled.

What happens if I activated Win XP from the laptop? Will the Microsoft
computers recognise
there are 2 different hardware environments using the same XP serial #?
Will my XP then be
disabled on both the desktop and laptop?

Thanks in advance!

Buck

all the features will be disabled and you won't be able to use the PC.

You need to buy a new licence which can be found at the link below
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/addlic.mspx

It's actually quite simple. If you activate it on the laptop, you will be
stealing.

It may or may not activate.
But in installing on the other computer you already violated the EULA you
agreed with.

If the previous activation was less than 120 days ago
(i.e. less than 4 months ago), you might have to call
Microsoft and tell the friendly rep that the previous
installation had been removed.

Probably not. But they will remember that it has
been less than120 days since that OS was last
activated.

> Will my XP then be disabled on both the desktop and laptop?

No, just the old laptop when the 30 days are up if you
haven't activated by then.

In spite of what options you have received, the only one available is to go
buy another copy of XP. The copy that came with your 2350 is OEM for that
computer only and is not transferable to another computer.

It sounds like he has already successfully "transferred"
it to his old laptop PC (which may well have been a Dell
computer with a Dell BIOS and recognizable as a Dell
by the OEM copy of WinXP).

This is all a matter of what one "can" do versus what one "may" do.

One "can" take the CD and install XP on other systems. If they are
recent Dells (within the last 3 years), then no activation will be
necessary. One "can" take the CD and install XP on a non-Dell or older
Dell system. Activation will be required, but one "can" use the number
on the system it came with.

However, installing Windows on a system for which one hasn't purchased a
copy of the same version breaks the license agreement and is not legal.
So one "may" not do it.

Exactly. And thank you for making that explicitly clear.
Too often answers to such questions do not differentiate
between what "can" be done and what "may" (according
to Microsoft) be done.

What do mean by the "number" here? I used my copy of XP Pro that came
with my 4550 to install XP Pro on my Thinkpad, but had to enter a COA at
the appropriate point during the install (not a problem since my TP came
with XP Pro on it - my problem is that IBM has not been able to get me a
working set of recovery CDs.

The number on the COA sticker.

As my therapist pointed out many years ago: "just because you can,
doesn't mean you have to". ;)

You're probably no worse off for the lack of Windows recovery CDs from IBM,
since you already have an XP Pro CD. Anything else important you may need is
available for download from the IBM web site. About all that would be missing
are the various and sundry Windows background bitmaps, if you like any of them.
To IBM's credit, there is far less crud and useless stuff with a
factory-installed OS than with other brand names like HPaq... Ben Myers

Well, it's not exactly a number. The COA is better described as 25 alphanumeric
characters punctuated by hyphens... Ben Myers

Agreed, Ben, I gave up on IBM after 3 sets of bad CDs, although I do
think IBM should be able to furnish a working set.
