My previous video card was an 8500LE, it had a HSF that was glued on..when I popped it off, I found it was bearly touching the core...crappy. So tonight I was looking at my 9500Pro, and remembered seeing hardware reviewers remove the big HSF(same as the 9700Pro) only to find a nice application of Arctic Silver underneath..Luckily my HSF is held on with pushpins, so I had a look for myself.
You know what I found?
A PHUCKING THERMALPAD!!!!...AAAARRRGGGHHHHH!!!
That blows...but earlier last week I was talking on msn chat with Willamette, he said that he was going to stick a Thermaltake Crystal Orb on his 9800Pro...I told him not to because I thought the factory HSF would be more efficient.
Willamette...sorry I was wrong. I had a brand new Crystal Orb in my computer desk that I bought at Fry's, and never used. The thing is so heavy I didnt trust glueing it onto my 8500LE...seriously..but on my 9500Pro, the pushpins matched perfectly, and after a liberal dousing of Arctic Alumina, my card was back in my machine and running. I dont know how many of you guy's have heard a Crystal Orb at full speed, but let me tell you, it's louder then the 9 case fans I have(higher pitched)...and as for it's performance?...I had my core running @ 375mhz!!!
THATS 100Mhz OVER STOCK!!!
The highest it would go with the factory HSF was around 355mhz....It hasnt been easy for me..I really wasnt too stoked about this card at first, I couldnt overclock it because 9500Pro's have a bios that locks out their clock speeds. But once I flashed the bios(thanx warp@rage3d) and changed the cooling...I have a freakin' monster of a video card!...I wish I could hump the damn thing!...(so stoked)
