Greetings,

I was wondering if anyone knew exactly what parts/funtions of the video card/system are being tested in third (Lobby) benchmark?

I've been trying to diagnose my computer for the last 6 months, to no avail. When I run the cpu at proper speeds (1.53) it will always freeze on that test, and at the begining of QuakeIII. But, it will also freeze randomly. Sometimes on the desktop, sometimes just navigating the C drive. It will run with fsb of 100 at 1.15 ghz just fine. The most ironic thing is, six months ago, I built the new computer so that I could play games besides Starcraft, and thats the only game that will run stable at 1.53 ghz.

I've tried switching to on-board video, and even put in my ol' ATI Rage Fury Pro (8mb). I still got freezes in all of those things (well, excpet for QuakeIII, which wouldnt even open).

I've updated to Cat 3.4, and down to 2.5, no difference.

I've thought about overheating. Under heavy use, the 1.15 gets to 56C, and the 1.53 wil lget up to about 65C (temp taken right after freeze). From what I've been told, and experienced, it should still be ok at that temp. Actually, my fan stopped the other day, and it was in the low 90's (c), the only way I knew something was wrong was because I smelled that wonderfull burning scent that haunts all of our nightmares. Ever since then, I've had Motherboard Monitor 5 always running, but I havent had and problems with the fan stopping.

System Stats:

1800+ @1.15 ghz
512 sd133
20 gig Western Digital
Radeon 7000 (64mb DDR)
On-Board Sound ("something" '97)
PcChips M810l Mobo.

there is a video card called Rage Fury Pro with only 8MB?
anyway..
could that be your power supply? or your ram?
maybe you could try update bios also..

I dont think its the power supply, it goes up to 400w, and is turned down at the moment (ajustable). If I turn it up, it wont post, so I leave it down. I've also already flashed the bios to the latest version. The thought had occured to me that it could be the memory, but I've never had a way of testing it.

Oh, and yea, there is an 8mb model. :) I used it for several years.

Hmm, well, like I said, it went up to 90c and didnt freeze (just started burning). What type do you have? TB or Palo? Mine is Palomino.

What would you suggest as a fan replacement? I was looking at the Volcano 6, but I read that they were pretty loud. That wouldnt be that big of a deal, except when I want to download stuff at night.

palamino

90C ?!!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?

your lucky your CPU didnt die man. im serious!1!!

right now i have the stock fan on, but when i need to overclock im going to get a custom fan. i dont have any idea what kind...

someting QUIET tho. i really really hate noisy fans. the stock one i have rattles sometimes and that drives me nuts. i take the side of my case off and give it a whack to stop the rattling :D

Lol, I have a stock fan, but its not in use. When I first started having this problem, I started "poking" around in there. The fan poked back. . .my finger is better now, but sadly the fan was never the same. I had to take the fan from my old 500mhz k6-2, and tape it to the standard k7 heatsink. At this exact moment, my temp is 51C @1.15ghz. Maybe I'll get the Volcano 7. . .

That's just to funny!!, Sorry about the finger. LMAO

Honey, what's that smell? Don't bother me now I'm working on my computer! OOPS!

Thanks. . .:)

I'm not convinced on the heat issue, just because its pretty consistent on when it freezes, sort of. Like I said, it freezes randomly, but it will for sure freeze in the Lobby test, and in the opening of QuakeIII. I'm getting an 8500 on Monday, I dont think it will help any, as onboard video explodiated also, but you never know.

So, does anyone know what the Lobby is testing?

Other than DX7 no. However it's probably not WHAT it's running, just that it is running consistently hard enough for it to cause your system to choke. When I overclocked beyond acceptable (370 mhz memory) it would always freeze at the same spot (nature in 01, battle of proxycon in 03 [wouldn't freeze just sudddenly tore into shreds]) Now I would think that what's happening is that the lobby sceene is the first to REALLY get things going hard with your card (Dragothic maybe, maybe that warms it up) and in tht warm environment your have the card has no head room like before, is actually working hard and now can't disipate heat. That's my guess is that even if you had a developer's version running Nature would likely crash it too, and not because of what the actual parts of the card it uses are, just the fact that it is working hard and burning up.

Anywhoo that's just my theory, I doubt it's any specific code, just the total workload.

It could be. . .but even when video card is changed, it still freezes. I was thinking that it could be the memory. The sticker on it says pc133, and thats what it said when I bought it, but I was thinking. . .if the freezing is with fsb of 133, maybe its the memory (being 100 instead). I'm going to try and get another stick and try it out. We'll see. . .

Just click on Help in 3DMark2001. There are detail descriptions of what features are being tested in each module.

Thanks, that helped a lot. I got this from the help:

"All the characters use vertex shader skinning except if your system has a DirectX7 generation 3D accelerator, capable of hardware transformation and lighting. Then skinning is done using a custom skinning technique, which does skinning on the CPU, but transforms and illuminates the skinned vertices in the graphics hardware."

I wonder if since I am using a DX7 card (Radeon 7000), if thats putting too much stress on the cpu? Hmm, I dont know. I guess I'll find out on Monday.

This really doesnt belong in this board, but I dont feel like starting another thread just for this.

Does this TTFan look like a good solution? Its supposed to be rated up to 2000+, but only to 1.13 on a pentium chip. I was also looking at This One. I expect either will do, I just wanted to know if anyone had used or know about either of these. I like the first one, mostly because its small. I dont know who be angry at, the motherboard designer, or the case designer, but my hsf comes really close to the side of the powersupply as it is.
