"In this edition I refrained from adding any other component to the Power Box, such as a sound card, DVD-ROM, CD/RW and more, because the benchmarks in this first Power Box article would not benefit from it."
WTF!! These test were rigged right from the start, Tom is a fucin joke.
Im sure we all dont need sound cards or CD-ROMs. Those benchmarks are effected that much that you had to leave them out to beat the P4??
Was there some kind of incompatability? Did you do the same for the Intel box?
If any computer's benchmarks are seriously affected by the addition/subtraction of a CD-ROM and a sound card, then it shouldn't be competing against these powerhouse systems anyway. Sound cards now have onboard DSP's so the CPU overhead is very low. Tom could've just as easily stuck a soundcard on either of the systems and it wouldn't have changed much. A CD-ROM even less so. I think what Tom's thinking is that to create the Ultimate Power Box he'll need to select a very nice (as in high quality sound) sound card and CD-ROM (RW, DVD or whatever). It's just icing on the cake though for a good system. In this article he was addressing speed as an issue. Later he plans to use more high-end components to create the ultimate.
Basically, it's like saying a Porsche has a very nice high-power engine, but in addition it has an excellent stereo system. The stereo system doesn't affect the speed of the car though.
Tom stats that benchmarks did not benifit from it (must have hindered it), I take it that it was a negative effect when installed and he removed them to get better results.
Or there was a compatability problem of some sorts. maybe DMA or some other anomoly was happening.
I havent run the 3dmark 2000 since someone else pointed out the pause on AMD systems. but it may be same problem that tom is trying to work around ATM.
There is a reason why he left those parts out. not like he didnt have a SB live sound card around. BTW how did he load software without a CDROM? Ok, so he loaded software and removed CDROM?
I might not have been on this particular forum for that long but there is one thing i never understood about them....why the hell is someone like Fugger still here.... I mean all you have to do is criticize and bad talk, why bother, nobody is gonna change there mind from someones' point of view that is given off so negatively..... I mean give it a break dont you have something better to do...like go to a Intel based forum and talk about how good they are?
Fugger, your attitude sucks. I was actually impressed these last couple of days with some of your posts being helpfull, but overall you are a waste of space....get laid or stop posting here....enough already....
Not really sure how Tom would install without a CD-Rom. I'd imagine he just meant that he didn't bother with a DVD or CD-RW or anything. It probably has a standard CD-ROM. The additional heat provided by a CD-RW wouldn't be all that helpful to the benchmark as the idea behind the Vapochill was to make it as cold as possible (probably a good reason to not use a SCSI drive either). As for the Soundcard, there are a few new contenders, maybe Tom's just waiting to see which he likes the best. Or maybe there is a driver compatibility issue with the AMD 761 and an SBLive! card. I dunno, lots of possibilities. But I really don't think either of those components would have affected the benchmarks. Just because the benchmarks don't benefit from something doesn't automatically mean that those said components hinder the benchmark.
Fugger is a moron. Never had anything important or helpful to say and never will. Point is- an overclocked thunderbird outperforms a p4. Tom has always done these occasional extreme system bechmarks and it's just supposed to be fun. And for most of us, excluding whiney little bitches like fugger, they are fun because it shows us the possibilities out there.
It's posts like Fuggers that may eventually get this forum killed, or burn out anyone who actually tries to come here for some usefull information and turn it into a big defeat or defend Tom forum.
All that those benchmarks showed is that Rambus really is not worth the price, and ddr is not that expensive fugger, ddr on crucial.com is barely over the price of sdram. The performance difference between the two systems was not huge reguardless, and it says to me that both companies still have competition against one another. Intel is lucky though that they have their name. If it wasn't for that it would be a definite uphill battle for them. Especially since the p4 is no longer the fastest chip ever seen. To bad the p4 can't perform to Intel's hype or it would be a hell of a chip.
I once knew a guy who was a total bone head and remains so to this day(if the rumors are correct).
He replaced the battery in his 1986 corvette and could not believe the extra power his car had. He just would not stop talking about it. He couldn't understand why everyone he told this to started laughing (well those people that know what a battery in a car is used for).
Finally someone told him that all the battery does is supply enough power to turn the engine over(start the car) then its job is done.
Fugger you brought a smile to my face when I read this post. You reminded me of that guy.
I think instead of upgrading your processor next time you should just get a faster rom drive. That should get you blazing through the benchmarks.
just curious....are you implying that this is an AMD forum? The latest official polls show that the P3 is in use more the the Tbirds. Just a something that i noticed.
The last time I tried to use my imagination, I ended up in a straight jacket!
