Gainward FX5800 ultra heat prob

Anyone else having problems with their ultra 800 screwing up when warm ?. Cooling the rear memory heatsink seems to help but I shouldn't be doing this !. It is incredibly hot even after only 5 minutes of 3D use.

Interesting to see one of the new FX5900 cards has ANOTHER fan on the back !

the 5800ultra should not have been sold. nvidia said themselves that it was a failed product



um.. but some custom ramsinks and more case fans? thats all i can tell you

Charming !

My problem is now cured completely. Yes this card has it's problems, yet I've cured the ones that matter (software & hardware). What am I left with ? - a card that beats my GF4 hands down (3Dmark2003 has increased from 1820 to 4590 @1024*768, similar results @1600*1200). I can run virtually everything at 1600*1200 smoothly with everything switched on - including DX9 demo's and my 3D writing software.

Are you saying I should have waited for the FX5900 ?. I'll be buying that also, the 5800 will be going into another machine...

Many others will be buying this card, my experiences will help them no end.

I know where the '0's are.....

I'm surprised you're going fine with the noise the dustbuster emits!

Hmm, no need to get a 5900 now, it's not more than 20% better performing, only get it if you're transfering cards to different systems.
But if your current 5800 is working fine (which is rare lately, according to many), then great! The new Detonator FX make this card significantly better than the 9700PRO!

thats very debateable

first the whole cheating issue with 3dmark03

and the fact that maybe Nvidia had tweaked their drivers for Doom3 and ATI hasnt yet

we shall see what is faster once the retail of Doom3 comes out

considering that its way faster than his old card he probaby feels its justified. heck, id love to have a GFFX to upgrade from my radeon8500

but id never actually pay for one. hehe.. see my point

'Dustbuster'....not the Gainward FX5800 Ultra/800.

It has a different fan/heatsink combo, nothing blowing out the back (check their website). Now with my extra heatsink on the rear ram - the fan runs slowly for some considerable time, when it does pick up the 'lower than you would think' noise is inside your PC - not thrown out the back so is not bad at all (unless you are in a padded cell ?).

I'm now looking into why the fan picks up at all - when it does the GPU heatsink is still quite cool to touch, I suspect the ram heat (from both sides of the board) is confusing the heat sensor (wherever that is).

3DMark2003 ?....how about 2001SE (8445 - now 9954). And don't forget CodeCreatures (2347 - now 3406).

Asus P4S8X-X, 1gig of 333 ram & Windows XP (SP1).
Latest Nvidia and AGP port drivers

a benchmark is alot easier to cheat in than a game....


because in games you are free to roam and look wherever you want no matter what video card you have.. i doubt if Nvidia cheats in Doom3, except maybe lowering the texture and mipmap resolution and then resetting it when you close the game


but that is much easier to see than the 3dmark03 incident
