Am I right in assuming that the ONLY difference between the Radeon 9700 and the Firegl X1 are the drivers and bios???

I've read through loads of posts here and just wanted to be sure of this before I went ahead and bought a R9700 to mod.

If there are any other diffs then please direct me to them... Also are there any benchmarks that compare the R9700 to the FireglX1?

I believe what you're saying to be correct, I think a 9700 can be "Softmodded" with drivers, but this is a question you might want to ask at the rage3d.com forums to make sure.
