Is there any downside to installing DX9? What works and what does not work with it? Is there anything to be gained if you do not have a DX9 card and are not playing a DX9 game?

Ive install DX9 on three systems that dont have dx9 cards and no problems at all. One computer is even using a pci card. Since more and more games are requireing DX9 go ahead and install it. You just wont see any of the extra eye candy that dx9 supports. So far I havent seen or heard of any downside to installing.

DX9 is backward compatible with older DX version. It's just a set of new API (or instructions) for windows to run 3D applications. You should not have any problem if you install that.

Im also using the 64 MB vivo card. So far its holding up good with the current games. Granted it doesnt have the extra eye candy like the new ones do. But since i havent played on a newer card I cant tell. New computer will have at least a 9700 pro when I build it.

Does 3DMark2001SE run with it? I do not see why it should not, but I remember a friend saying something about that. He ended up using 3DMark2003 or something, but he may not know what he is talking about...

Your friend is right. If you have DX9 installed, 3DMark2001SE will not run. It looks for version 8.X. and will crap out of you if it doesn't find it.

Does 3DMark2001SE run with it? It runs w DX9a, so I don’t see why not DX9.

Every new version of DirectX is a superset of the previous version. That means that DX9 has all of DX8.1 in it. 3DMark2001SE will run just fine with DX9. Want proof?

i installed dx9a or the newest one, now the only problem i see is some programs dont see it, so they say cannot continue without installing dx8, so i click to let it try to install it but then it says it isnt neccessary, lol just goes in circles, i tried to install a program called vegas video, audio it is a recording program, couldnt do it.
i also saw this with a few games, rememeber i dont think you can uninstall dx9, well actualy i saw a site where it explained how to, but it isnt as easy as using an uninstaller.
