ask me anything about cars. i love cars even more than computers. ask me about anything technical and what cars to buy. i've built 5 engines ranging from turbo, winsor long block, short block, carborated, fuel injected, and crazy a$$ nitro systems. i am amature race car driver. i have 3 cars, two of them are race only cars meaning they don't pass emission. i've got a '95 mustang cobra supercharged with 562 horsepower at the wheels. that's my daily driver. i've got a 3000gt vr-4 i've removed the twin-turbos and installed a single large turbo and a fogger nitrous system with 100 shots of hp. the car makes over 800hp with the nitrous on and 700 without. that one is a full blown race car. and i also have a '92 mustang gt all naturally aspired drag race car with 650 hp. that's my money car. i compete about twice a month. don't mean to brag... it's just my passion.

the 240 $ 280z's are awsome cars. i'd say the best z car ever. i've raced the old z's and got my a$$ whooped which does not happen often. it's definetely a classic.
in stock form it won't be able to take on a dodge neon but racers put 350 ci v8's. that's a popular swap for that car.
it's got a large engine bay and a very ridged body frame.
that's only if you are planning on restoring which will cost you some bucks. 5000~10000 sounds about right for that car. i personally would buy it only to modify it. i wouldn't drive that around in stock form. it is really hard to find that car in good enough shape to drive everyday. plus i need more power.
the thing about classics is it cost too much to restore or find original parts for it. i'd try to find a late model Z cars for about 8000 bucks.
i remember a while back when i used to race in scca notheast division, i ran into a team who had the original z with the 2.5L det engine used in skylines. he had few mods and he was running 2bar/29psi of boost. he said that car made 750hp. that's 300!!!! hp/liter!!. well that's only if you want to go really crazy. if you want a car with some potential and some kick, get a mustang. they are really cheap. and you can find aftermarket parts for it everywhere.
if you want to learn to fix or mod you car, just read stuff about your car. read magazine, books, parts guides, whatever.
since this will be your first car, it wouldn't be a good choice to get yourself an old unpredictable car. it's more like a project car, with any classic cars.

I belive your number are BS. you prob have a mustang GT with 240HP that cannot break 110Mhz safely.

I own/drive a sick ride with dialed in 440hp 383 supercharged, I know what it takes to get HP's above 500hp. let alone 800HP from a 3.0 liter block that originally produced around 200hp. GG

Here is a maxed 3000GT-VR4, rated @ 312 hp(375 at wheels). you pushing 800 is impossible. that car/drivetrain/block cannot handle it.
nor can mustangs!

mustangs are the best cars to drag race. when it comes to parts availability and cost, mustangs are far better than any other cars.
their are 3000gt's making over 1000hp's out there in the import drag circuit. and my car does make over 800hp. there's no real way of telling the hp@the wheels because it's a 4wheel drive car. the 800hp is with the nitrous estimated at the flywheel. that's about 690@the wheels.
where do get the 200 stock hp? the stock vr-4 (twin turbo)
makes 320hp at the flywheel. you loose about 14% hp to the wheels. how could the car you said have more hp at the wheel than the flywheel? strange. the block for the car is stock and it can handle the boost. i have a stroker kit with forged je pistons. making the displacement slightly larger at 3.3L. i've invested over 30grand on that car. with new turbo, pistons, intercooler, racing headers, removed the catalist converter, the only thing stock for that car is the block and chassis. it's a race car. i don't and can't drive that car on the streets. and did i mention i'm running the turbo at 32psi. stock gt runs at 13psi. i've removed the twin turbos and put in a single turbo used in mercedez diesel trucks.

i saw the videos of the car race and couln't have laughed harder. the guy doesn't know how to stage nor roll start nor power shift. then again he's a street racer. that gt must pull about low 13's. mine does 9's. i've grown out of street racing because it's stupid and dangerous to others. plus i needed real competition. i started racing kart at 14 and my first ever car was the '94 cobra which i destroyed. i've raced at scca gt class with the mitsu. i've won 5 races in 2 years. out of 13 races total. road race that is.
i've tried hard to be good but there are too many good drivers. i gave up road course racing because of financing and too many good drivers. somethings in life you are born with. obviously i will never be a ayrten senna or a mario andretti.

Reminds me of someone here in South Africa who did sky diving with one of those cameras bolted to his helmet. Dude's main chute didn't open and when he pulled ze reserve it opened partially. He then proceeded to fall to good old earth in record breaking speed and landed flush in a bush. The partial chute and the bush saved his life and the best part: he only broke a few bones but was able to stand up. And everything was on the camera.

I think he realized, theorized and then proceeded to synthesize the hard fact that adrenaline is brown during that fall..

It's scary how long the S2000 takes to get through 1000 to 7000 rpm in 1st gear. But when it hits that schweet spot it makes it worthwhile... Just keep it in that band.
