9500pro + dx9.0a = HARD crash?

Hello guys

I've hung around these forums for awhile, but this is my first post. Im having MAJOR problems and am hoping that somebody can help me. Here's the deal...

Upgraded from a GeForce DDR to an ATI 9500Pro
IT ROCKED.
No problems what-so-ever.
I get GTA: Vice City and it auto-installs DirectX 9. After around half an hour of playing I get a hrad crash and my comp just reboots. So I try again, same problem. So I go get the catalyst 3.2 drivers. Same problem. So I go get DirectX9.0a and the problem gets worse. Now it hard crashes within a minute of play. So I try other games. Now every game I have crashes within a minute of running. Around this time Catalyst 3.4 comes out. I grab it. No help. I change bios settings that may help 1 by 1, but no results. I defrag, run norton windoctor, disk doctor, etc etc. Nothing helps. So I go grab DirectX Eliminator and use it to roll back to DX8.1 and still have the same problem. So I uninstall that Catalyst 3.4 drivers and reinstall the 3.2 drivers. This is where I was 3 weeks ago when I could play games so it should work, I just wont be able to play Vice City. But my games still crash within 1 minute of running.

All other apps work. I can play movies until my eyes pop out. I can run visualizations in WinAmp. I even ran Prime95 to try and stress my cpu thinking maybe it was a heat issue since it's summer and it has gotten hotter. Still no results. I am now at a loss and am hoping somebody, anybody, can offer some advice or even just a direction I can try.

Thanks in Advance.

I'm also using ATI 9500 Pro with DirectX 9.0a and I have no problems. My suggestion to you is this:

1. Format your computer and re-install Windows.
2. Install Catalyst drivers v3.2
3. Downlod and install the latest DirectX from Microsoft's website.
4. Install GTA (choose not to mess anything regarding your DirectX installation) and try to play the game.

After installing DirectX you may want to visit Windows Update and download all the critical fixes, some of them are related to video games (at least when talking about Windows XP).

This should do the trick. Sometimes things just get mixed up in Windows and the only thing the PC needs is a format. I believe you won't have any problems after this.

Wow. Format? Man, I wouldnt mind formatting if I hadnt just done it a month and a half ago.

I guess that's one option. Not one I really want to do, but I will if I have to. But before I make such a drastic decision, is there any other advice out there?

If nothing else, Id like to figure out why this has happened so I can prevent it next time instead of just erasing it all and starting over.

Thx in advance

guys, pls dont tell me that formatting is my only solution. I have had some people from futuremark suggest it was either my lack of ram or my PS. But I think it's a software issue personaly because this never occured until I installed DX9.

thx in advance.

From my experience i went from a Nvidia to a ATI and i had similar problems. To get rid of all of the old Nvidia drivers you need to reformat.

What size PSU do you have? an Athlon 1.4 and R9500 Pro is a very power hungry combination.

Well,

Just about everyone has told me both here and at futuremark that re-formatting is my best option...so I suppose thats what I'll do. Seems aweful drastic, but then again I am runnin winblows, so thats how it goes I guess.

Thx all.

By the way, I have an Enermax Whisper PSU with a total of 431 watts. So I doubt thats the problem. After since I started buying solely AMD, I have been very cautious about my PSU.

Anyways, thx again. Time to wipe....wish me luck...

I have same card, except I flashed its BIOS and it's recognized by XP and Catalyst as a 9700 PRO :) Anyhow when playing GTA for awhile I also get random crashes, but only when overclocking the card. Recently I fixed the problem entirely by upping all my voltages when I'm in the mood to game. I up VCORE to 1.70 from 1.650, up DDR volt to 2.7 and AGP volt to 1.7 and decrease RAM timings from 6-3-3-2 to 7-3-3-2.5 and it rocks. I can overclock fully to 9700 PRO speeds and I run 4X AF and AA w/o any probs now.

So I recommend making sure it's in 4X or 8X AGP mode, try enabling fast writes and maybe add some voltage to system RAM and AGP if your board does that and try decreasing RAM timings a bit. Also if your system is overclocked, try running everything at stock values.

I too have a new ati card, a R9700 pro upgrade from a geforce2pro.

And yes i too have game crash (technically game FREEZE) issues... but only at resolutions below 1280x960.

what happens when you run a game at very high resoltion? 1280x1024 or 1600x1200?

Im curious to know if your problem is anything like mine.

My PC is so powerful it it makes a 286-16 look slow!

Update:

I formatted my windows drive and reinstalled windows. I then installed all the latest drivers. I then installed DX9.0a. Afterwards I installed GTA: Vice city. And, wouldnt you know, after 2 minutes of running it crashes and my comp reboots.

So, Im going to format windows again. I am going to reinstall windows again. I am going to install all the latest drivers. Then I will install DX8.1 and see if I can run my old games without crashing.

Gonna have to do the process of elimination now unless some1 else has a better idea.

PooBaa, from what I have noticed, resolution makes no difference.

have started to notice others are having the same problem, which leads me to believe it is a problem with either DX9 or ATI.

Will give more results when I have ime to format again...

Make sure that there is no shred of Nvidia drivers/folders/scripts, etc on the hard drive. Other than that you gonna have to format and reinstall. Beyond that opens the door to $$$$$
