Hi Have some long winded question'but hope sonme kind person can answer them.

I currently have a Geforce 3 ti200 128mb.
I usually get all my PC stuff from a local store.

http://webplus.silicon-group.co.uk/acatalog/Silicon_Group_GRAPHICS_CARDS_20.html

I notice that the lowest price geforce fx is the 5200 at £80.
Whereas the 5800 is £310.
Whats the justification to justify a £230 price difference.

How does the 5200 compare against my current Geforce 3 ti200 128mb?

Lastly how does the FX Cards compare against the GF4??

The Geforce FX 5200 is about the same as your Geforce3 Ti200. Maybe a little better with antialiassing enabled.
Don't bother upgrading to it, you won't see a difference.

The GeforceFX 5800 is incredibly more powerful, but expensive and loud. The Radeon 9700 PRO is cheaper and faster, it's definitely the way to go in that price range.

The Geforce 4 holds up pretty well to the lower and middle end of the Geforce FX line. The Geforce4 Ti 4600 is about as good as a GeforceFX 5600 in most cases. Still, in that price range you're better off with a Radeon 9500 PRO or 9600 PRO.

The GeforceFX 5900 is the crown Jewel and is a very fast card.

The best cards for their price ranges are (from cheapest to most expensive):

Radeon 8500/9100
Geforce4 Ti4200
Radeon 9500 PRO
Radeon 9700
Radeon 9700 PRO
Radeon 9800/ Geforce FX 5900 (tied for first place)

IMHO

the money spend wont be worth the 20% difference in speed.

Well, except that the Radeon 9xxx and GeForce FX series have DX9 support, which is definately not something included with the GeForce 3.

havent seen your name before so heres the deal with the 5200 with DX9:

most previous generation DX8 cards render pixel shaders and vertex shaders faster than it does. ive said this before more or less:

assuming that video game requirements get higher with time, DX9 games will require more than DX8 games. and sinse the 5200 renders DX8 effects slower than most DX8 hardware, you can see how it performs in DX9.

how does 12FPS sound to you? it barely keeps up in UT2003 for christ sakes so wat good is having DX9 compatablity

Dunno about the 5600 but out of the geforce 4's the ti4800se is better. It's a 4400 with 8x.

So youre loyal to nVidia I guess.

Can't be pursuaded to get a Radeon 9500/9600 Pro for not much more than a ti4800.

Well okeydoke! It really dosnt matter what ti4800 you get.
Get the cheapest one. Theres no sly companies producing 4800s with slower clock speeds or crappy memory that I know of. But I could be wrong.

Long live ATI.

the ti 4600 is basicly the ti 4200 overclocked with better cooling don't bother with the 4400 or 4600 buy the 4200 with a 30 dollar fan and u can easily get 4600 speeds

None of what you said is remotely true.
First of all, a stock ti4200 and stock ti4600 (reference design) have the exact same cooling.
Secondly ti4200s rarely reach ti4600 speeds unless you have insane cooling, esp. the memory, unless u get a gainward golden sample.

Long live ATI.
