How important is Direct X 9.0 support?

For the price of a ATI Radeon 9600 Pro, I could get a Geforce 4 Ti4800. Since the Ti4800 is one of the best graphic cards out here, is it still worth getting now even though it doesn't support direct x 9.0? Or is that support important. FOr less than 200 dollars, it seems like a pretty good deal. If Direct X is important, is the radeon 9600 pro a good choice? If not, any recommendations? I currently use (go ahead and laugh) Voodoo 3 3000 AGP and in dying need of a new graphic card.
Any feedback is appreciated,
-Howard

When you say ti4800 do you mean ti4800se? This is a 4400 with 8X agp. It is a fair midpriced card. It is about on par with the 9600 in directx 8.1 . Directx 9 is not really in use yet, but expect games coming out this summer and fall to start using it. The 4800 technology is already a year old,so if you want something to last, go with the Radeon.

ive said this befoer!!!! but poeole told me i was wrong@ daM!!\\

DX9 is important. not for the fact tat you will be losing special effects. mostly you wil be losing performance. a 9500pro will render Doom3 faster than a TI4600 i imagine becaaused of its very fast Pixel Shaders which support DX9

Women only like men that have a dx9 card. It's a fact.

Darn, no wonder the ladies have been avoiding me. No matter, I'm about to pick up a Radeon 9800 Pro. DH, you've saved my life!
