I have a network problem I am having a little trouble tracking down. Setup is as follows:
1 Primary Domain Controller – Win2000
1 Terminal Server – Win2000
15 Client machines – Windows 98.

Occasionally, one machine will drop off the network. It suddenly stops accessing our database. I can still ping the server, but no network drives are accessible (through my computer). If I // (servername) then it opens just fine, and the connection is reestablished.
When a system drops off, I can still ping it from the server. There are no shared drives on any client machines, so I don’t know if those access or not. If this were one machine, I could swap the NIC or work on the cable or something, but just about every machine has done this at least once. I replaced our old hub with a Netgear switch, but that didn’t seem to have any effect. I ran a cable tester on all the ports in the building, and found no problems there (but I have a cheap cable tester).
I am thinking there must be a network card somewhere causing the problem. Does anyone have a good way to track this problem down? Suggestions?

Had exactly the same problem, 98 box(es) just lost the connection as far as windows was concerned, servers could access the 98 box(es) could still ping the server, not an ideal solution, but in my case win2k pro on the workstations sorted it. I've been doing some work at home which involves a couple of 2k servers and 2k/98 boxes, and the 98's almost always either take twice as long to connect or dont connect at all- even tho they can ping.
