Unwinder, the guy who makes Rivatuner has found a list of 50+ aplication detection mechanisms in Nvidia drivers, most of these affect the nature test in 3DMark2001SE.
That means Nvidia cheated severly in benchmarks used in Tom's VGA charts, all of the reviews at [H], all of Anands reviews, etc. This dates all the way back to the Radeon 8500 debut days. The story broke at B3D, but the site is down due to high traffic http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6377 You can read much about the news in the [H] forums also...

Man this sucks.

Basically the result of this whole series of exposed cheats means that 3DMark is only good for comparing apples to apples, oranges to oranges. The bonus for nVidia owners is that you can rename all of your games "3DMark2001.exe" and get a nice performance boost.

Build a foolproof system and they'll build a better fool.

I believe it was actually known when the Detonator 40.71 came out. The nature test had this weird sharpness loss. And most geForce 3s rose in performance.

I could be wrong though. But nonetheless, I had a feeling 3dMark01 was not left alone. I wonder though if those detections were driver boosts à la Detonator XP OR real cheats as in predicting an outcome and modifying it so it no longer is raw card performance.

yeah iw as comparing a 3dmark01 score that my friend had with is GF3

in EVERY part of the test his card does worse. fill rate geometry etc and all my minimum frame rates were alot better even tho he has a faster processor, yet the nature test was faster

i was like WTF, because the 8500 has 2 pixel shaders and teh GF3 only has one. of all the test teh nature one is wher ethe 8500 should stomp the GF3 the most

Yeah this is a BIG problem IMO, in the sense that it's not optimization if it's not producing the same quality or same 'interoperability' (being able to do th same if th path is diff.). And it's not just the fact that it's 3D, it's really to me the death of good benchmarking unless someone does give a rats ass other than those of us who already 'know' the score.

I wonder about any OpenGL chets for Spec ViewPerf tests now, but I'm not so sure if that's as big a concern for Nvidia. But it does make me question their results despite the Quadros being GREAT products.

Can you really trust anything anymore? Losing benchmarks to me can only HURT themarket leader in the long-run, since they have such a LARGE market share now, if they can't use un-blemished benchmarks to 'prove' their 'leadership' then why not simply go with an ATI, SIS or Matrox card in most people's minds. This will definitely stave off immediate sales slumps that could have happened due to 2 undeperfoming series in a row, but not for the long term. You may see Nvidia lose its market share across the board and even Intel's 'EXTREME' graphics being compared to the FX5200 series (seems about right to me  )

I've said it before I'll say it again (and maybe a few more times because I need the keyboard practice after vacation). This Sux, it hurts us all in the long run. Any gains we expected from competition are being eroded by the lose of credible testing.
Just my 2 frames worth.

Even the hardcore NV-fans should have some negative opinions about the company now, with every cheat uncovered I loose more and more respect for Nvidia. I mean, they make great graphics cards, but this kind of behaviour is disrespectful towards consumers as well as journalists who rely on benchmarks in their reviews.

Has anyone contacted Nvidia about this directly and gotten a response? I'd think that the NV fans atleast would be contacting them looking for an "acceptable" explanation to defend their company of choice...
It would be interesting to see if Nvidia will even try to validate what they are doing or deny it altogether.

I would like to see business-sites taking notice of this, what Nvidia is doing can´t be jelly for the investors. I think that it in some ways also could be classed as false advertising.
