Microphone muted

I use Skype VOIP on my computer and it has worked great for a month. I
bought new headphones yesterday that use a USB port and had software that I
installed. I could not use the mic and after uninstalling the software and
going back to the old audio jack ones I discovered that whenever I bring up
the system or make a call on Skype the mic is muted in the Volume Control
box. I can manually clear the mute button but as soon as I go to use it
again it is muted. Any ideas on how I can get it to stay un-muted?
