Hi

I have following question, how can I find out whether my FX5200 has 64bit memory bus or 128bit memory bus. Chaintech and AOpen have in their spec following sentence: "Memory interface 64/128bit". The difference in scores is huge, at work (I work in a computer shop) we have one machine that has P4-2,4GHz/256MB/aopen fx5200 128MB (chipset 845PE) and 3DMark2001 SE score is 5000 points (drivers are latest from NVIDIA home site). I checked from futuremark.com that computer with this configuration should get at least 7000 points.

HOW CAN I RECOMEND FX5200 videocard over GF4 MX when it gets less points than older card.

First off, you can't really reccommend the 5200 over the MX because both are crap.

Anyway, some OEM versions of the 5200 nonultra do in fact use a narrow 64-bit bus. I'd return that 5200 and buy something better, there are a million choices. Get an nVidia Ti4200 or something.

If your enquiring about what to recommend to your customers I wouldn't worry if I were you. The majority of customers know little about computers and care even less. Just sell them the card which comes in the prettiest box.

Also as a word of advice, get out of computer retail. It will make your life a living hell.

Well, my P4 2.4GHz with a GF4 Ti4600 gives me around 12500 points in 3dmark2001 SE. So, you definitely should get rid of your FX5200.

Although I do like nvidia more than ATI, I cannot really recommend a FX5200 or FX5600 since they are both crap and expensive. Those cards are just good for basic DX9 compliancy but performance will be very bad in upcoming games like HL2, D3 or DE2. Don't cforget that these are budget cards not the real FXes!

If you want a decent DX9 card from nvidia, you have only one choice: the FX5900 whether it's the ultra, the normal or the soon-to-be-announced value card. The ultra and normal versions of the 5900 are slowly appearing everywhere worldwide. I already manage to buy a 5900 Ultra in France which will arrive next week ;)

Guys

if don't have anything practical to say about subject then don't, because ordinary customers are not going to spend money for fx5900 and that's a fact.

that's true but ordinary customers won't neither go for a FX5200 but rather a FX5600 or even better a Radeon 9500/9600. What did you expect for a price of 80$?

All I was saying in my previous post is that the FX5200 is a lousy performer and that you shouldn't recommend it over the GF4 MX unless you need basic DX9.0 compatibility. Of course, don't expect higher framerates than with a GF4 MX.

For low-budget investments you're better off with a Radeon 9500 or 9600.

Concerning your memory bus question, it seems that all 128mb FX5200s have a 128-bit bus and all 64mb FX5200s do have a 64-bit bus (at least the 64mb versions from AOpen and eVGA).

but the 9800pro is equal at least in speed and cheaper

so wheres teh justification for saying that ? the fact that you own an nvidia card ?

what does this thread now have to do with me? Yes, I do own a GF4 Ti4600 and I do recommend ATI cards currently, so what the heck?

Can't we live in a world where there exist two graphiccard companies?

Besides, vacs is right! The only DX9 nVidia is the 5900Ultra. Phial is also right, in that the 9800 Pro is as fast and considerably cheaper.
