I am now using windows xp. Is it necessary to upgrade it to SP1 or SP1a as the OS is now running very smooth? Also what is the difference between SP1 and SP1a?

Some users in the newsgroup claim that after installation of SP1 or SP1a will make the OS slowly and more crashes will be observed? Is it true? This is of course one of the most important factor for me to upgrade or not.

Looking forward to any suggestions and opinions.
Thanks and regards

Personally, I had problems with SP1 that went away when I didn't use it. So I just install every critical update except SP1. But on a few machines I've built for customers, they ran fine with SP1 (which I slipstream onto the Windows XP CD so it's already integrated right off the start).

There was a critical update (see news item here) that slowed systems down, so in case Windows Update shows that patch for you, make sure you uncheck that as an update you'd like to install.
