In ati control panel, fast write on/off, what is that?

whats the difference between turning it on and turining it off?

"Fast Write" is a performance-enhancing feature supported by some motherboards.

I'm not even sure exactly what it does, but the performance jump is next to insignificant, and for alot of people find that it makes their system unstable to turn this option on.

ah ok~
coz I actually found that if I turn the fast write off, and set agp to 4x (got that from NWN forum), the game NWM plays better. less "stop and start" if u know what i mean.

so I was just wondering what exactly is fast write.

From what I remember fast writes is suppose to give you a speed boost, maybe not much. But it’s related not sure how to your PCI bus. Other worlds if you have any or a lot of PCI cards you may have more instability problems. So if you can use fast writes do so, but if you have stability problems forget it. And from what I’m getting it you have a ATi card forget it, unless that is just some cards.

Do me a little test, take out any PCI cards and turn on fast writes and see if it works correct for you. That would give me an ideal about my PCI theory, well it was something I read, so I take no credit or flame for it.

By the way taking out your PCI cards is your choice. Any ATi Ginipigs out there?

Straight outta the Rojak Pot (my emphasis):

AGP Fast Write

Common Options : Enabled, Disabled

Details

This BIOS feature controls the chipset's AGP Fast Write capability. Fast Write is a feature which accelerates memory write transactions from the chipset to the AGP device.

Normally, any data meant for the AGP device must be written to the main memory for the AGP device to read. Fast Write allows the AGP device to bypass the main memory and directly access the data. To do so, the AGP device will act as a PCI device whenever the chipset attempts to write to it. This allows the data to be directly written to the AGP device (like other PCI devices), instead of being written to the main memory first.

As you can see, bypassing the main memory saves time and improves the AGP read performance. However, AGP writes (to the chipset) will not benefit from Fast Writes as it will follow normal AGP protocol and write to main memory.

In addition, while PCI signals are used for Fast Write transactions, the behaviour of those PCI signals has been modified and do not follow PCI specifications. Therefore, this feature may cause problems with some PCI cards.

Therefore, it is recommended that you enable AGP Fast Write for better AGP read performance but disable it if any of your PCI cards start acting funny.

Please note that for AGP Fast Write to work, both motherboard chipset and graphics card must support the Fast Write protocol and the data transfer rate must be at AGP2X or faster.

ahh, thanx for that bit of information, from that it seems fast write on or off should not effect my game play, since I don't have any pci cards.

weird.

oh yeah and fast write does work for you because you have an AGP card. its not for PCI, its for AGP

my kid brother was forced to carry a laptop since grade 6.
he basically typed everything on it. poor kid, the burden of technology (laptops were big and heavy back then).

@ flamethrower205

Yeah, and age is about as relevant as those 3dmark points as well!

Hey! What am I saying?!

Controversy or none, I'm still a blind follower of 3d mark scores. I'm still one of those people who would go around saying them at a LAN, or tatoo them on my penis, or something.

LOL, this thread sure has changed direction.

aweicc, just because you don't have any PCI cards doesn't mean you don't have any PCI devices. I'm guessing you have onboard sound and nic/modem, which are both normally on the PCI bus. So if either of them (or your vid card) start acting screwy I would turn fast write off and see if that fixes it.
