5600 or 9600?

Which graphics card is better without considering price, 256 mb Nvidia GeForce FX 5600 or a 128 mb Radeon 9600 pro? And would a 5600 with DDR II to much better than with regular DDR? Thanks for the help.

the 9600 is better in most benchmarks excpet doom 3 and it is a very good overclocker

And the only reason it's worse in D]|[ is because that was an NV chosen demo, basically favouring NV.

As for the overclocking, despite my results, don't feel it's guaranteed. Early samples were roundly Wonderful overclockers (best of entire market IMO) however subsequent samples have turned out to be a mixed bag of Awesome and Good.

The question is whether you are talking about the 9600Pro or Non-pro. Full reviews of the Non-pro are a little rarer, and don't expect the same overclocking out of them as they have lesser memory, and may be made from cores not suitable for the 9600Pro (but I don't know). As the original post was about the 9600Pro, I'll say: I would recommend the 9600Pro over the FX5600series, but I'm not sure about the 9600Non-pro as I have seen very little about it.

I believe you are correct about overclocking. I couldn't get my card as high as yours, although I still got it high. Anything over that though I was getting artifacts and a locked system. Maybe if I messed with it a bit longer lowering either the memory/core and raising the other I could get slightly better results, but that is a long tedious process and I also don't want to fry my card. <A HREF="http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=874147" target="_new">Here</A> are my overclocked results in 3D 2K3 for those that haven't already seen them. I'm sure GrapeApe won't mind posting his (which were better) or maybe he will bump his old thread.

I am always HAPPY to post my <A HREF="http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=765996" target="_new">3Dmk03</A> marks right after GW's posts simply to put a grin on my face. Pobably the only <A HREF="http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=765996" target="_new">'mine's bigger than yours'</A> comparison I will ever care about. I have since upgraded my Creative drivers (thanks to Tom's Hrdwr FRENCH version [beta drivers]) and can now run the 60 sounds tests, but it DIDN'T increase my base score so I don't think that's involved.
In the end I'm happy with what <A HREF="http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=765996" target="_new">I</A> got, but yes it does seem to NOT be the norm (maybe 20%), especially of cards built by ATI's partners, even Sapphire (who make ATI's cards). However they are still pretty good oveclockers, just don't expect <A HREF="http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=765996" target="_new">MY </A> +130mhz cores and +60mhz memory on every card.

But I still think the 9600Pro is a better card than MOST FX5600s, but there is a Caveat. There is a 'NEW' 5600Ultra which seems to hold it's own and even beat the 9600Pro on many occasions. Check <A HREF="http://www.hexus.net/review.php?review=570" target="_new">HEXUS</A> for the article I was irected to by [H]. That does change things a bit, but it's not a widely availible card yet. Even overclcoked I think these two cards will likely runn head to head in the end.

Mayb I'll stop simply to save you from yourself. That WAS the absolute max I could get stable out of the 9600P without any external changes, so I'll leave it there unless the Cat 3.5 (or higher) have some major 9600P benifits that make it worthwile.

I'll concede victory to you for now.

Edit: yes I noticed how close the scores were in Troll's, 0.1 fps. IT made me smile a little. I like how the cards stack-up. It's interesting the design diff. yield close scores in one area and then wide gaps in others, and result in overall close scores.

One thing that has me peeved, My scores (base/stock scores) have gone DOWN since adding the Creative EAX 60+ sound support. A hit of about 80 points.
I'll maybe give it a go on Sat or Sun depending on free time, just so I can uninstall Creative if need be. I'm in no rush, but I'm sure it'll be interesting. Maybe I should hook the AC outlet to my PC.

Yeah, I'm thinking it's gotta be something like that.
I'll probably simply uninstall the audio drivers (all of them) and do a run without audio (at all). Then I'll compare and decide what to run the OC run at. I might also remove the Audigy since it runs off the PCI slot and may be fudging some throughput. We'll see. Still gonna wait 'til monday for the OC run, but I might give the sound-less run a go tommorow, at stock speeds.
I'm gonna alo go check Rage3D just to see what the suposed support/improvements is/are.

If you want to get a nice score pull all PCI cards and disable all of the onboard stuff (particularly USB). That gave me a 500 point increase in 3DMark01.
