Are damage and loss of life the same thing?

No.

300.3. When a phase ends (but not a step), any unused mana left in a
player's mana pool is lost. That player loses 1 life for each one mana
lost this way. This is called mana burn. Note that mana burn is loss of
life, not damage, so it can't be prevented or altered by effects that
affect damage. This game action doesn't use the stack. (See rule 406,
"Mana Abilities.")

Damage
Damage can be dealt to creatures and/or players.
Damage dealt to a player is subtracted from his or her life total.
Damage dealt to a creature stays on the permanent until end of
turn, even if it stops being a creature. A creature with damage greater
than or equal to its toughness has been dealt lethal damage and is
destroyed. (See rule 420, "State-Based Effects.") Damage doesn't alter a
creature's toughness. A noncreature permanent isn't affected by damage
(but if it becomes a creature again before the damage is removed, the
creature may be destroyed). During the cleanup step, all damage is
removed from permanents.
Costs and effects that read "lose life" or "pay life" don't deal
damage, and that loss of life can't be prevented or otherwise altered by
damage-prevention effects.

No. Damage generally causes loss of life. Therefore, things that refer
to damage (such as a Circle of Protection) won't do anything about a
card that causes loss of life.

Is there a particular card or card combination that you have a
question about?

No.

Damage to a player -causes- loss of life. (Damage to a creature does not,
because creatures don't have life.)

Damage can be prevented or caused to be dealt elsewhere. Life loss cannot.

A player losing life to something that tells them to lose (or pay) life is
_not_ being damaged in any way.

No. Things which trigger off of damage will not
trigger on loss of life (but things that trigger
on loss of life *will* trigger on damage, since
damage causes loss of life), things that prevent
damage will not prevent loss of life, etc.

Think of it this way: All damage is life loss. But not all life loss is
damage. They're not EXACTLY the same thing: Damage is a more limited form of
life loss. That's why Transcendence and Lich's Tomb have that reminder text
that damage causes life loss. (Oath of Lim-Dul, if reprinted, would also have
that reminder text. Weirdly, Lich wouldn't, because it only triggers off of
damage.)
