Hello all. In reading a recent thread about Lightning Greaves, I
suddenly remembered one of my initial confusions with the equip
ability.

Lightning Greaves relevant line is:

Equip {0} ({0}: Attach to target creature you control. Equip only as a
sorcery. This card comes into play unattached and stays in play if the
creature leaves play.)

I remember wondering what in the world "attach" meant. In looking
through the rules, it's obvious that "attach" is also a word used in
the rules for local enchantments. However, I don't ever remember
anyone ever really using that term until equipment showed up.

Does anyone remember when "attach" showed up as description of
artifacts' or enchantments' relationship to another permanent? I must
admit that, without a glossary entry, I found "attach" a little
confusing. Until I re-read the relevant rules portions, I never
realized that equipment and local enchantments have this in common.

Thank,

Rick Kunkel

I recall it being in the rulebooks at least as far back as the advent of
6E rules, but it wasn't in common use until Equipment. You didn't
really need the term to discuss local enchantments since attaching them
is not normally seperate from playing them.

Well, we did, but generally when answering questions about Protection.

It was there in the first 6th Edition rulebook; it's not there as a term in
the RV or UL rulebooks. I don't have the 4E or 5E rulebooks fully typed in,
but looking in the 5E rulebook reveals that it was still using "target" as
what local enchantments in play did to the permanent they were on. So I'd
say it came in as a term with 6th Edition.
