I have been having this problem for a month or two, and I have no idea how
to fix it. The automatic update button in the corner of the screen showed
up. I clicked it and it said i needed to install the update called
"Microsoft Corporation - Video - GeForce4 MX 420". (Size is 12.2 MB and it
is nVidia driver version 52.16 if that is any help.) When i try to install
it, this is as far as I get:
"Initializing installation... done!
Installing Microsoft Corporation - Video - NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420 (update 1
of 1)..."
And after a while it shows an error message that says the download could not
be installed. After i exit out of the screen my computer starts to be really
choppy and laggy. When i try to scroll down my Windows Explorer screen (or
anything else) i only get flashes of the pages. The best way i can describe
it is that it looks like im seeing photographs instead of a video. I then
have to "roll back" the video driver to get it to work(and even this freezes
the computer up 1/2 of the time). After i roll back the video card and
reboot the computer, THERE IS THE AUTOMATIC UPDATE AGAIN!!! What am i
supposed to do, I dont even think I really need this update but i cant get
the darned auto update to go off the screen

First of all you should not be downloading Updated Video drivers off the XP
update site.....go to the video manufacturers website.Theirs will always be
newer than anything on the XP site.
Automatic Dowloads can be configured under MyComputer/properties.........see
the tab "Automatic Updates"??
When it tells you that you have an update go to the update site by way of
Internet Explorer once on the site you can tell it not to notify you again
of that particular update.
To solve your present problem uninstall your video drivers and reboot.Upon
booting XP should install or ask you for the install files.Chances are you
now have a mix of old and new on your system. If you go to the NVidea website
they have a driver remover utility that you should really run and then
reload your video drivers.
