I use and download files from the itunes store yet cant play the music
on my Palm Zire 72. Is there a third party option for me? I'd pay the
$30 if it would work.

You can use iTunes to convert the songs into MP3 files.
You may have to store the MP3 files on an expansion card rather than the
Zire's internal memory.
Where do you store the songs now?
What application are you using to play the songs? What does the
documentation say about what formats the application supports?

..mp4 is the proprietary iTunes protected format. You will not be able
to play native mp4 files on any Palm unit.
In addition to that, iTunes won't let you convert one of it's protected
songs into a non-protected format.
What you can do, however, is use a little workaround. Burn the
protected tracks to an audio cd, then re-rip them as mp3. Once on the
audio CD, iTunes won't know they are protected anymore, so you can rip
them no problem. While this essentially means you need to duplicate
any track purchased from iTMS, there really isn't any way around it
because Apple won't license the mp4 format to anyone else (it helps
them lock users into buying an iPod).
