Hi, I just formatted my PC and Installed XP (Applying ALL the patches). For some reason, XP seems more sluggish then the OS I was using previously (Win98SE). Could It be my hardware ? (As I have done all other steps such as defrag and the like)

Duron 800
2x 128MB PC-133
ASUS A7PRO (VIA KT133)
SB Vibra 128
Motorola 56K
Radeon 9000 64MB

What do you think I should upgrade to ? (If Necessary)

It's all the little things, that ms decided you needed or slowed down for the old people LOL.

Try <A HREF="http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm" target="_new">here</A> for services that can be disabled. You should have around 13 when viewed through task manager.

Also a registry tweak will get that start menu up to speed.

Click the start button, then click run. Type "regedit"
From there go to HKEYCURRENTUSER > Control Panel > Desktop.
Once you're there, go to the MenuShoDelay string and change the value from 400 to 0, then reboot. (I usually set mine to 40ms).

Most important to get the services under control though.

Indiscriminately applying all the patches when going to Windows Update is like authorizing a new mechanic over the telephone to replace all the rotors on your vehicle the next time it appears to need a brake job, strictly on his say-so, without taking the time to look and see if the mechanic is correct in his assessment ... or laying an expensive scam on you. It could cost you dearly in the long run to simply assume after the scan that every patch or hotfix MS recommends for your system is absolutely necessary, and will function without error.

Take the time to read the information about <i>every</i> update before allowing it to download and install ... and only apply what is essential and applicable for your particular system.

By the way, if the update isn't the reason for the slow-down, perhaps you should check the IDE controller/channels DMA settings in the Device Manager, and make sure that the settings are correct.

winXP is new and therefore designed for faster computers than was win98. More "things" are turned on, like the services psykoionov (however the fvck you spell that :p) was saying. Disable those, turn down some of the fancy GUI stuff and you should be pretty good.

Some day I'll be rich and famous for inventing a device that allows you to stab people in the face over the internet.

Yes, 256 MB RAM is close to the minimum for Windows XP.
Take a look at the Windows XP tweaking guides at www.tweaktown.com - they have lots of tips for improving the performance of Windows XP

Toejam31 is quite right about that particular windows XP update, 811493.
It's been slowing a lot of people's computers down lately, and if Hiroshi has just loaded XP and took all the updates there is a chance that's the problem.
Costs nothing to remove the update and see if it helps.
