For those around long enough to remember, can one of you please settle a
few arguments for me?

At what point (5th-Ed. changes, 6th-Ed. changes, or ???) did tapped
creatures in combat become able to also deal their combat damage?

Also, at what point (which batch of changes) did "damage resolution step"
disappear and damage start using the stack?

Thanks!

Attacking creatures: 1st Ed.
Blocking creatures: 6th Ed.

That was a change for 6th Edition.

That was also a (set of) change(s) for 6th Edition. There was a fairly
comprehensive reworking of a lot of stuff for 6E; this is also when the
"tapped artifacts, except for certain kinds of abilities, 'turn off'" rule
went away, as well as when "upkeep costs" and "phase abilities" turned into
triggered abilities. Combat damage started using the stack at that time as
well, and interrupts vanished softly and silently away...

Thought so. (and "D'oh!" from me for not specifying tapped *blocking*
creatures, for those who pointed this out...)

And "mana source" had already vanished by then as a card type, right?
If memory serves, that was kind of a 5th-Ed.-only oddity.
(reason I ask is that some friends of mine are challenging my memory of
these things, so I need some backup...) :)

Tapped BLOCKERS have been able to deal damage since 6E.

Tapped attackers have always been able to deal damage; there would be
little point in attacking with most creatures if this were not the case.
It used to be widely believed, because of cards like Maze of Ith, that
UNTAPPED attackers didn't deal damage, but this was never true, save in
the presence of specific cards like MoI.

Also 6E. (Damage prevention step, actually.)

I'm not sure I'd say "already". The term went away with the
introduction of 6th edition, not before. The mana source concept had
been introduced with 5th edition; the Mirage rulebook had a list of
changes from 4th to 5th, including that one.

I usually answer questions here under the assumption that the poster is
trying to settle an argument.

And this page might be useful for identifying things that changed with
6th edition:

"Mana source" was only ever in existence in 5th Edition; before that they
were all Interrupts, and after that they were all "mana abilities" and
"instant spells".

>If memory serves, that was kind of a 5th-Ed.-only oddity.

Yep.
