I have only used Radeons since their introduction (Radeon DDR -> Radeon 7500 -> Radeon 8500) only to find myself with the opportunity to buy a GeForce 4 Ti4800 for a ridiculously good price. However I have no idea what its performance is like. Most reviews ive found are not in english, so i figured id get some opinions off the 'ol THG board. Your thoughts are much appreciated!

heya cefoskey:

From the benchmarks i have seen the ti4800 does pretty well, the only difference between it and its older cousins is the AGP bus is 8x and it uses DirectX9, its no radeon 9800pro or FX 5900 but it will play all games currently out there with max graphics details with excellent results.

"It's just a regular Ti4600 with agp8x support. So just look up some Ti4600 numbers" - wrong.

Actually its based off the TI4400 not the TI4600. They've just pumped the 4400 up alittle by making it AGP 8x and a couple of other small things.

I'm actually thinking about trying it out. That is unless I find a really good deal on a Quadro4 XGL instead. . . :D

I had a Visiontek Ti 4600 and posted a score of 14155 in 3DMARK2001. I then bought a MSI Ti4800 and posted a score of 14654. Both were overclocked to the max. I think the Ti 4800 is a great card. If you are getting a good deal go for it as long is at is a name brand card.

To my understanding, both of you are wrong, and both of you are correct. According to nVidia's web site, the GeForce Ti4800SE is an 8X card based off of the Ti4400. The Ti4800 (non-SE) is based off the Ti4600, and is also 8X. I've seen the Ti4800 labelled as a 4600 with 8X, however, and on occasion seen Ti4800SE's labelled as just plain Ti4800's. Be careful before you buy, especially from somewhere like Pricewatch (well, a site referenced from pricewatch). As to whether or not the 4800 series cards support DX9, I'm not really sure, though I suspect not, given the reference boards they're based on. Hope this helped!

big deal Direct X 9 hasn't gone mainstream yet, getting a DX9 compatitable card is just "preparing for the future and Doom 3" lol Ti4800 is sweet, not as sweet as 9500pro but real sweet~~~

If it's a good deal, go for it. The 4800 (SE or not) is quite a biut more powerful than a Radeon 8500.
