If you want to play DX9 games(which we dont have any of), get at least a DX8.1 capable card. GeForce4 Ti or 8500 and up. If you can afford a DX9 card, get it. DO NOT BUY A GEFORCE FX 5200 THOUGH!!!!

It'll work, you just won't be able to see any directX 9 only features.

The first DX9 games will come out with DX8 support.

DX9 will add some extras to the graphics and maybe some games will run more smoothly in DX9 mode.

Don't forget : company wants to sell lot of games. If they only support DX9, they will leave a lot of gamer disappointed.

Of course, if you have TOO MUCH money to spend, buy a mid/high-range DX9 card. On the long run, DX9 is better... But money wise, I think a good DX8 card is still a smart choice.

the features will work but they will be generated in software, its only that the Dx8 card has no hardware support for Dx9 (case in point, the Kyro2, no T&L HW but a SW T&L engine instead)

Trust me I know what I'm doing... ooops, grab the cat...

No, the features will not work, and they will not be generated in software.

Play morrowing with a DirectX 7 card and then play it with a DirectX 8 card. You will miss certain effects.

Same with Dx8 and 9.

Vertex shaders can be calculated on the CPU. Pixel shaders can be emulated via an older pixel shader version, but it takes more passes, and may not have exactly the same result.

I remember Daveperman saying that PS2.0 was so 1337, that it either couldnt be emulated in other versions or would just look nothing like it intended. But PS 1.4 can be emulated via older versions.
