Fish Allergy

Is it possible to be allergic to fish? My entire life I've always caught fish but have never really ate it regularly. One time I tried some flounder and then after a couple minutes my mouth started feeling tingly or itchy. I tried other fish like salmon and bass but the same thing happens. My doctor doesn't have me marked down as allergic to fish so I don't think I am but I want to know why every time I eat fish I get hives and such.

I love fish, especially salmon, great source of protein, but the itchiness gets really annoying.

Has this happened to you? What did you do?

  1. Your doctor would have no idea you were allergic to fish unless you mentioned it to him. I would ask him to be honest as it sure is not normal for anyone I have ever known to feel tingly or itchy after eating it. It would not be an allergy I have heard of but anything is possible. I have heard of people being allergic to other people before so fish would not be that strange really.
    Bottom line ask a doctor.
  2. Called up my doctor and he says I would have to take a test to make sure. My mom doesn't approve of it though. She thinks it's because I don't like fish and doesn't want me getting tested. Oh well. Thanks for your reply. I can't believe people can be allergic to other people lol! Must be weird. I'll try getting used to the itchiness maybe that might help.
  3. you can be allergic to shellfish, so i don't see why fish could cause an allergy. was the fish plain? if it gets worse then see someone about it.
  4. It was flounder with some soy sauce but I've had soy sauce my entire life without any problems. I don't know what you mean by "plain" so I'm guessing it you want to know if anything else was added. The only thing I can think of is salt and pepper which I also have had my entire life lol.
  5. You can become allergic to anything at any time in your life....so in other words maybe your not allergic to chocolate now but a year down the road you could become allergic to it...and vice-versa,some allergies can decrease as you get older...
  6. You should go a specialist for that sometimes it was what fish have eaten that made you allergic.

Your mother is ignorant to ignore a potentially serious health issue like food allergies. Tons of people die because of food allergies around the world each year. You dont know when one day you might eat a particular fish or shellfish that will cause your throat to swell up and suffocate you. You need to go get tested to see exactly what allergies you have. I know for somethings they can put you on an antihistamine or a shot that will suppress the allergy, depending on what it is.
