I want to upgrade to a better video card, and I am deciding between a Radeon 9600 pro, and a Radeon 9700 pro. I don't need the high end graphics of a 9800 or a FX 5900, and on ebay I can get the 9700 pro for around 230-250 dollars, and about 150 for the 9600 pro. Is it worth the extra 80 to go to the 9700 pro? Will I do better buying a FX 5600 with 256 mb of RAM? I play games like battlefield 1942, not to graphic intensive at this point but right now I am running a GeForce 2 MX. Thanks.

hehe, just because you mentioned eBay, I hope your winning bid gets you a box with a phone book inside.

If you can get a 9700 Pro for $230, there's your answer. And Crashman, be positive!!! A phone book... goodness...

Just remembering an argument I had with a guy last year when he said he could get a Ti 4600 for $150 off eBay and compared that to Newegg's prices for ATI cards.

Well, my current card is a NVIDIA GeForce 2 mx. So would the driver isssues really be enough to buy a FX 5600 over a Radeon 9700? Isn't the ATI card better, and I want the better card, unles I will have issues with it.

ignore zyprd omg...

Just make sure you completely uninstall all nvidia drivers and stuff and youll be completely fine. There is no associated performance hit AT ALL!

Yes 9500 has 8 pixel pipelines, but the 9700 is still alot better, get it.

The 9500 PRO has 8 pipes and is a great card, better than the 9600 PRO, but not as god as a 9700.

Video cards, from worst to best, IMHO
(levels with an equal sign means they're pretty much on par with each other, give or take a benchmark or two)

8. Radeon 9500 = Geforce4 Ti4200 = Geforce FX 5600
7. Geforce4 Ti 4400, 4800SE = radeon 9600
6. Geforce4 Ti 4600, 4800
5. Geforce FX 5600 ULTRA Rev 1 = Radeon 9600 PRO
4. Geforce FX 5600 ULTRA Rev 2 = Radeon 9500 PRO
3. Geforce FX 5800 ULTRA = Radeon 9700
2. Geforce FX 5900 = Radeon 9700 PRO
1. Geforce FX 5900 ULTRA = Radeon 9800 PRO

You can get a 9700 non-pro on ebay or online retailers for about $200, that's a really good deal.

Although if you can get a 9700 PRO for $230, go for that...
